Riyadh: Saudi authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal residency and labor violations, arresting over 22,000 undocumented individuals in just one week, according to the latest data released by the Saudi Ministry of Interior. This sweeping campaign is part of the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to ensure law and order, safeguard national security, and regulate its labor market in line with Vision 2030 reforms.

The ministry reported that during this one-week operation, a total of 13,835 people were detained for violating the Kingdom’s residency (Iqama) regulations, which require all foreign nationals to possess valid residency permits. These individuals were either found without proper documentation, overstaying their visas, or involved in other residency-related violations.

In addition, 4,772 individuals were apprehended while attempting to cross the Saudi borders illegally, highlighting the growing concern about unauthorized entries into the country. Authorities confirmed that the majority of these attempts were intercepted along the southern borders, particularly those shared with Yemen, which have historically been hotspots for illicit crossings.

Another 3,540 foreign nationals were arrested for violating labor laws, which include working without a permit, engaging in unauthorized employment, or operating outside the legal scope of their work visas. These violations not only destabilize the labor market but also pose risks to the Kingdom’s economic and security infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia, home to millions of expatriates, has long struggled with issues of illegal immigration and labor violations. In recent years, the government has ramped up efforts to address these challenges by launching nationwide inspection campaigns, introducing stricter regulations, and encouraging undocumented migrants to voluntarily return to their home countries under amnesty programs.

Officials from the Ministry of Interior emphasized that all arrested individuals will be processed according to the law, and strict penalties—including fines, imprisonment, and deportation—will be applied where applicable. Employers found hiring or sheltering illegal workers are also subject to heavy penalties, including business license revocations and significant financial fines.

Meanwhile, in a parallel development, Saudi Arabia has also taken significant steps to combat corruption within its public sector. In July 2025, anti-corruption authorities launched investigations against 425 government employees suspected of involvement in various forms of financial and administrative misconduct.

Out of these, 142 individuals were taken into custody for their direct roles in corruption cases, which include bribery, abuse of authority, embezzlement, and forgery. The Saudi Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) has confirmed that these investigations are part of an ongoing national campaign to uphold transparency, integrity, and accountability across all government departments.

Sources within Nazaha stated that the crackdown involved several ministries and public sector organizations, and that the arrested officials include both senior managers and lower-tier employees. The agency further reiterated its commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels of governance, in line with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s broader reform agenda.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has taken bold measures to transform its economy and streamline governance under its Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to reduce the Kingdom’s reliance on oil, diversify the economy, and enhance institutional efficiency. Combating corruption and regulating foreign labor are key components of this vision.

The government has also introduced digital systems to monitor labor compliance and reduce human intervention in public services, thereby limiting opportunities for bribery and mismanagement. These reforms have received both domestic and international praise, with many viewing Saudi Arabia as a model for modernizing governance in the Gulf region.

At the same time, human rights organizations continue to urge the Kingdom to ensure that its crackdown on illegal immigrants is carried out with due process and in accordance with international human rights standards. There have been calls for providing legal assistance, humane detention conditions, and ensuring that deportations do not endanger the lives or rights of those affected.

In response, Saudi officials insist that the operations are conducted within the framework of national and international law, and that humanitarian considerations are taken into account—particularly in cases involving women, children, or those with medical conditions.

As the Kingdom tightens its grip on irregular migration and internal corruption, observers note that these campaigns are sending a strong message to both domestic and international actors: that Saudi Arabia is serious about reform, stability, and enforcing the rule of law.

With ongoing developments in both immigration enforcement and anti-corruption drives, the Saudi government appears committed to pursuing long-term systemic change. The coming months will likely see further operations, legislative adjustments, and policy measures as part of the Kingdom’s quest to build a modern, secure, and transparent society.
