OpenAI Set to Launch New Social Media App Featuring AI-Generated Content

OpenAI, best known for its artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, is preparing to enter the social media market with a brand-new platform designed to rival existing giants. According to a report by Wired, the company plans to introduce a TikTok-like social media app alongside the release of its upgraded video-generation system, Sora 2.

The app, modeled on TikTok’s familiar format, will feature a vertically scrolling video feed where users swipe up and down to explore content. However, unlike other platforms, all videos on OpenAI’s app will be entirely generated by artificial intelligence. This means users will not be able to upload videos or images directly from their phone’s camera roll. Instead, the content will be produced exclusively using the Sora 2 model.

Reports indicate that Sora 2 will initially be limited to producing short clips of up to 10 seconds. Whether longer videos can be generated outside the app remains unclear. Industry observers have noted the similarity with TikTok’s early days, when it also restricted posts to clips of only 15 seconds, before gradually expanding to allow videos as long as 10 minutes.

The app will also include an identity verification tool, which can confirm whether similar AI-generated videos already exist within the system. This feature is expected to help track originality and transparency in AI-created media. Additionally, OpenAI has built in safeguards: Sora 2 will refuse to generate certain videos that might violate copyright restrictions, though the exact scope of these limitations has not yet been disclosed.

The move signals OpenAI’s ambition to expand its user base and diversify beyond text-based AI. By integrating Sora 2 into a consumer-facing social media app, the company hopes to attract millions of users eager to experiment with creative video content. Analysts believe the app could also serve as a gateway for new audiences to try OpenAI’s other AI models, such as ChatGPT for text, DALL·E for images, and Whisper for audio transcription.

Industry experts note that while TikTok and Instagram Reels dominate the short-video ecosystem, OpenAI’s approach is different: a feed composed solely of synthetic media. This raises important questions about authenticity, creativity, and the future role of AI in digital entertainment. On one hand, the app could spark a new wave of creativity by lowering barriers to video production. On the other, critics may raise concerns about misinformation, deepfakes, and the blending of real and synthetic content online.

By embedding clear transparency features like identity verification and content filters, OpenAI appears to be preparing for these challenges. If successful, the app could position OpenAI not just as a technology provider, but also as a key player in the global social media industry — a field currently dominated by tech companies from China and the United States.

Though an official launch date has not yet been confirmed, the announcement has already drawn widespread attention in both the tech industry and among users curious about AI’s growing role in entertainment. If the app gains traction, it could mark a major shift in how social media platforms operate, ushering in an era where AI-generated content sits at the very center of digital culture.
