Rivers Swell Across Punjab Amid Monsoon Rains and Melting Glaciers: PDMA Issues Alert
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an important alert concerning the rising water levels in major rivers across the province. The surge is being caused by a combination of intense monsoon rains and the rapid melting of glaciers in the northern areas, leading to a situation that requires constant monitoring and preventive measures to protect lives, infrastructure, and agricultural land.
Rising Water Levels in Rivers
According to the PDMA spokesperson, the Indus River is currently experiencing a medium-level flood at the Kalabagh and Chashma barrages. These points are considered critical because they regulate water flow towards central and southern Punjab. A medium flood level at such major locations signals a heightened risk for nearby communities, agricultural fields, and low-lying settlements.
Meanwhile, low-level floods have been recorded at both Tarbela and Taunsa barrages, while the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala is also witnessing a low flood situation. These developments indicate that multiple rivers are under strain simultaneously, which increases the possibility of more widespread flooding if the rains continue at their current intensity.
The spokesperson further clarified that the Jhelum River and its associated tributaries remain normal in terms of water flow, and so far no alarming increase has been observed there. Similarly, the Chenab and Ravi Rivers are also reported to be flowing at normal levels, posing no immediate threat. However, continuous rainfall in their catchment areas could potentially change the situation in the coming days.
Flooding in Smaller Tributaries
Beyond the major rivers, smaller watercourses and seasonal nullahs are also experiencing surges. The PDMA confirmed that Nullah Palkhu in the Cantonment area and Nullah Bansanter are witnessing low-level flooding. Historically, these nullahs have posed threats to surrounding communities because their sudden overflow often affects residential neighborhoods, roads, and agricultural fields in Punjab.
Such smaller streams and tributaries are often overlooked compared to major rivers, yet they can cause significant localized damage. Urban flooding due to clogged drains and poor infrastructure further aggravates the situation, making it vital for authorities to issue timely warnings and carry out clearing operations.
Dams Near Capacity
Another concerning update shared by PDMA relates to the water storage levels in the country’s two largest reservoirs. Tarbela Dam has now reached 98% of its total storage capacity, while Mangla Dam stands at 68% filled.
The near-complete filling of Tarbela Dam is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it ensures that Pakistan will have sufficient water reserves to meet irrigation and power generation demands. On the other hand, it leaves very little room for further inflows in case of heavy rains, thereby forcing dam authorities to release water downstream. Such releases can contribute to sudden rises in river levels, increasing the risk of flooding in nearby districts.
Mangla Dam, though not yet at full capacity, still has limited space left for additional inflows. With the monsoon season at its peak and glaciers continuing to melt at an accelerated rate due to rising temperatures, both dams will have to be managed very carefully to balance water storage needs against flood control measures.
Impact on Agriculture and Livelihoods
Flooding during the monsoon season always raises concerns for Pakistan’s agricultural sector, which remains the backbone of the economy. Punjab, being the country’s primary agricultural province, is particularly vulnerable.
Medium to high floods can inundate thousands of acres of cultivated land, damaging standing crops such as rice, cotton, and sugarcane. Farmers in low-lying riverine areas are especially at risk of losing not only their crops but also livestock, which plays a vital role in rural livelihoods. The PDMA alert thus serves as a warning for farmers to take precautionary measures and prepare for potential evacuations.
Preparedness and Relief Measures
The PDMA has urged local administrations and district disaster management authorities to remain on high alert. Rescue teams have been instructed to remain prepared for rapid deployment in vulnerable areas, while flood protection embankments and barrages are being closely monitored.
Authorities have also stressed the importance of public awareness. Communities living in flood-prone zones are being advised to stay in constant communication with local disaster management cells, avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rains, and ensure that their families have basic emergency supplies ready.
Additionally, arrangements are being made to establish relief camps in case evacuations are required. Health units, food supplies, and temporary shelters are being mobilized to minimize human suffering if the situation escalates into a major flood event.
Climate Change Connection
Experts have once again linked the increasing unpredictability and intensity of floods to the broader issue of climate change. Pakistan, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, is among the top countries most vulnerable to climate-related disasters.
The dual impact of heavier-than-usual monsoon rains and faster glacial melt highlights the changing climatic patterns. Glaciers in the Himalayas and Karakoram are melting at alarming rates, feeding rivers like the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab. When this natural process combines with torrential rains, river systems quickly reach dangerous levels, overwhelming both natural and man-made flood defenses.
Lessons from Past Floods
Pakistan has witnessed devastating floods in the past, particularly in 2010, when unprecedented monsoon rains submerged nearly one-fifth of the country, displacing millions and causing economic damages worth billions of dollars. The PDMA’s current alert aims to prevent a repeat of such large-scale destruction by ensuring early warnings and proactive measures.
Conclusion
The present situation in Punjab’s river system is a reminder of the fragile balance between natural forces and human preparedness. While some rivers remain stable for now, others such as the Indus and Sutlej are showing signs of stress due to heavy rainfall and glacier melt. With dams nearing their maximum capacity, authorities face the critical task of managing water flows without triggering downstream floods.
The PDMA alert underscores the urgency for citizens, farmers, and local authorities to remain vigilant. As the monsoon season continues, the country must prepare for potential challenges while also acknowledging the growing impact of climate change on its rivers and communities.
