In the Indian state of Assam, violent protests have erupted against the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The unrest is primarily centered in the tribal districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao (Kheroni), where tensions over land disputes have escalated into violent confrontations.

According to the Indian newspaper The Hindu, non-local settlers from various areas have occupied lands in Assam, creating severe threats to the economic resources and demographic balance of the indigenous tribal communities. Local tribes have demanded the eviction of these non-local settlers from agricultural and commercial lands to protect their traditional rights and livelihoods.

The protests, which began as demonstrations over land ownership and rights, quickly turned violent, leading to clashes between the local tribal population and settlers. Several people have reportedly lost their lives, and many others have sustained injuries amid the turmoil.

In response to the escalating situation, the Modi government imposed an internet shutdown in the affected areas to prevent the spread of misinformation and further unrest. Additionally, a curfew has been enforced in sensitive regions to maintain law and order and control the violence.

The unrest in Assam highlights the deep-rooted tensions over land, resources, and demographic changes, reflecting the longstanding grievances of tribal communities in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with efforts being made to restore peace and prevent further casualties.

Local leaders have urged calm and called for dialogue to address the tribal communities’ concerns, emphasizing the need for long-term solutions to resolve land disputes and protect the rights of indigenous populations.
