Rawalpindi, July 27, 2025 – A tragic incident of alleged honor killing has surfaced in Rawalpindi, sending shockwaves across the country. The case involves a married woman who was allegedly killed on the orders of a tribal jirga, despite her legal marriage and prior plea for protection before a court.

The case took a disturbing turn when the victim’s father-in-law, Muhammad Ilyas, issued a detailed video statement, revealing a harrowing sequence of events, including threats, forced handover, and eventual murder of the woman. The woman, whose name has not been disclosed due to cultural sensitivities, had married a man named Usman, a resident of Chehla Bandi, Muzaffarabad, on July 12 this year.

According to official marriage documents now publicly available, the woman entered into a consensual marriage with Usman in Muzaffarabad. She later appeared before a Judicial Magistrate to submit a statement confirming her free will in the marriage and seeking legal protection, citing threats to her life.

Victim’s Court Testimony

In her written statement to the magistrate, the woman detailed her vulnerable family background, revealing that her father had passed away and her mother had remarried. She further explained that her first husband had divorced her verbally, after which she chose to remarry Usman.

“I married Usman of my own free will. I fear for my life and request the court to provide me protection,” the woman reportedly stated.

Her actions show she was fully aware of the risks involved in her decision and attempted to secure her safety through legal channels.

Father-in-Law’s Testimony: A Desperate Plea for Justice

In an emotional and eye-opening video message, Muhammad Ilyas, father of Usman, narrated the ordeal faced by his family. He described himself as a poor laborer struggling to make ends meet and working hard to protect the couple.

“My son works at a workshop near Pirwadhai Bus Stand. We are poor people living on daily wages,” he said.

According to Ilyas, when the victim approached the court seeking protection, he managed to arrange Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000 and took both his son and daughter-in-law to court to formalize the marriage and submit their statements.

“I took them to court myself. The marriage was lawful. We recorded our statements. Everything was done according to the law,” he said.

Armed Invasion and Forced Handover

However, just four days after the marriage, tragedy struck. Muhammad Ilyas recounted that a group of 10 armed men forcefully entered their home, threatening the family with death.

“They said the marriage had already taken place, now the girl must be handed over to them so they can take her home respectfully,” Ilyas narrated.

Fearing for their lives, the family reluctantly handed over the young woman to her relatives, believing that she would be safe in their custody. But just two days later, the family received the devastating news that the girl had been murdered, allegedly in the name of honor.

Fear of Reprisal, Voluntary Surrender to Police

Muhammad Ilyas expressed profound sorrow and fear in his statement. Afraid that blame would fall on his son Usman, he voluntarily handed him over to the police in a bid to avoid further complications and prove their innocence.

“We are being threatened. We live in fear every day. I request the authorities to provide us protection,” Ilyas pleaded.

He emphasized that neither he nor his son were involved in any wrongdoing, and that they had respected the law at every step.

Public Reaction and Legal Ramifications

The incident has sparked public outrage across social media, with many demanding swift justice and strict punishment for those involved in orchestrating the killing. Human rights organizations have called the case a brutal violation of women’s rights, especially given the victim’s proactive approach to legal protection.
