Eight Killed After Massive Garbage Mound Collapses onto Building in India’s Pune

NEW DELHI: At least eight people were killed after a massive mound of garbage collapsed onto a building at a waste disposal facility in Pune, western India, according to Indian media reports.

The incident occurred at the Moshi Garbage Depot, which is managed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Reports said a large pile of waste, accumulated as part of a waste-to-energy project, gave way and crashed onto an administrative building within the facility.

According to media reports, 23 people were trapped in the incident, including 22 inside the building and one person outside, who was buried under the debris.

Five people managed to escape safely immediately after the collapse, while rescue teams worked to reach those trapped beneath the garbage.

Emergency services, including the Indian Army and multiple disaster response agencies, launched a large-scale rescue operation soon after receiving reports of the incident.

Authorities said eight people have been confirmed dead, while search operations continue amid concerns that one person may still be missing.

Officials added that the collapse also caused significant damage to the administrative building.

The cause of the incident has not yet been officially determined, and authorities are expected to investigate whether structural issues, improper waste management, or other factors contributed to the collapse.

Rescue teams continue to clear debris and search the site as officials assess the full extent of the damage.
