KARACHI: The Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) has arrested a 57-year-old suspected car thief accused of stealing vehicles parked outside mosques in Karachi, police said.

According to the AVLC, the suspect, identified as Insaf Ali, was arrested with the help of CCTV footage. He is a resident of Ghotki in Sindh and had allegedly been involved in car theft since 2005.

In a video statement, the suspect said he had started committing car thefts in 2005.

The AVLC said 14 cases had been registered against him in connection with car theft.

According to police, the suspect would steal vehicles during Fajr prayers and move them out of Karachi before morning.

Police said he would transport the stolen vehicles to Quetta, where they were sold. The suspect allegedly travelled from Ghotki to Karachi specifically to steal cars and returned after committing the crimes.

Investigators have also obtained information about a person involved in buying the stolen vehicles from Insaf Ali in Quetta. Police said efforts were under way to trace other people identified during the investigation.

The AVLC also claimed to have recovered more than 700 stolen vehicles across Karachi during the current year.

NCCIA uncovers ‘illegal call centre’ in Karachi

Earlier, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) uncovered an alleged illegal call centre that had reportedly been operating for several years at Shahrah-e-Faisal’s Business Avenue.

ARY News has obtained video footage of the NCCIA raid. According to the agency, the call centre employed a large number of people, including women and Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan illegally.

The investigation found that more than 50 people could work at the facility at a time. The NCCIA alleged that Ali Siddiqui, alias Medi, Fawad Ahmed and Farooq were operating the call centre, which had been equipped with modern facilities and remained active around the clock.

According to investigators, male and female employees allegedly posed as representatives of foreign financial institutions and companies and contacted overseas citizens. They allegedly obtained money and sensitive information from victims through fraudulent means.

Sources said authorities were also investigating the employment of Afghan nationals allegedly residing in Pakistan illegally, including how they were recruited and on what basis they were employed at the call centre.
