Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Congratulates PPP on Emerging as Majority Party in Gilgit-Baltistan Elections

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for emerging as the majority political party in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, describing the outcome as a positive reflection of democratic participation and political engagement in the region.

In a statement issued following the announcement of preliminary election results, the Prime Minister praised the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for their active participation in the electoral process and commended the peaceful conduct of the elections. He emphasized that transparent elections and vibrant political activity are essential features of a healthy democratic system.

According to the Prime Minister, the election results indicate that the Pakistan Peoples Party has emerged as the leading political force in Gilgit-Baltistan. He extended his congratulations to President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, acknowledging the party’s performance in the elections and the confidence shown by voters in its candidates.

“Pakistan Peoples Party has emerged as the majority political party in Gilgit-Baltistan and deserves congratulations,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said. “I congratulate President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on this achievement.”

The Prime Minister also appreciated the efforts of candidates and political workers from other parties, particularly the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He congratulated the successful PML-N candidates who secured victories in their respective constituencies and praised the party’s election campaign team for its hard work and commitment.

He noted that the competitive nature of the election demonstrated the strength of democratic traditions in the region and highlighted the importance of respecting the public mandate. According to Shehbaz Sharif, all political stakeholders contributed to creating an environment where voters were able to participate freely in the democratic process.

In addition to congratulating the winning parties, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for their enthusiastic involvement in the elections. He said the citizens of the region deserve recognition for taking part in the political process with responsibility and maturity.

“The people of Gilgit-Baltistan are also worthy of appreciation for their active participation in political activities,” he stated. “Peaceful and transparent elections, along with vibrant political engagement, are the beauty of democracy.”

Political analysts view the Prime Minister’s remarks as an effort to reinforce democratic norms and promote political harmony following the election results. Observers note that Gilgit-Baltistan’s elections hold significant national importance because of the region’s strategic location, unique constitutional status, and growing role in Pakistan’s economic and infrastructure development plans.

The elections attracted considerable attention from major political parties, with candidates campaigning on issues such as development, employment opportunities, healthcare, education, tourism, and infrastructure expansion. Voter turnout remained a key indicator of public engagement, and the peaceful conduct of the polls was welcomed by political leaders across the country.

The preliminary results suggest that the PPP has secured a leading position in the assembly, placing it in a strong position to negotiate the formation of the next regional government. However, final official results and any potential coalition arrangements will determine the political landscape in the coming weeks.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s statement also underscored the importance of maintaining democratic continuity and respecting electoral outcomes. He reiterated that elections serve as a cornerstone of representative governance and that constructive political competition benefits both the public and democratic institutions.

The Prime Minister’s congratulations come at a time when political parties are assessing their performance and planning their next steps in the post-election environment. While PPP leaders have celebrated their apparent success, other parties have also acknowledged the importance of the electoral process and the need to continue serving their supporters.

Gilgit-Baltistan remains a region of considerable strategic and economic significance, and the next government will be expected to address key development challenges while improving public services and promoting sustainable growth. Political observers believe that cooperation among elected representatives will be essential to advancing the region’s progress.

As the electoral process moves toward its final stages, the Prime Minister’s message highlights the broader importance of democratic participation, peaceful competition, and respect for the people’s mandate. His congratulations to the PPP, recognition of PML-N’s efforts, and appreciation for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan reflect a call for unity and constructive political engagement in the aftermath of the elections.
