Islamabad: A new report released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on the occasion of World Population Day says that 76 percent of young people in Pakistan are optimistic about their future, despite facing significant social and economic challenges.

According to the report, Pakistan’s population has reached approximately 257.2 million (25.72 crore), with one-third of the population aged between 10 and 24 years, making the country’s youth one of its greatest demographic assets.

The UNFPA noted that Pakistan’s future largely depends on the opportunities available to its young people, as well as their ability to make informed decisions and realize their full potential. While 76 percent of young Pakistanis expressed optimism about the future, 53 percent reported concerns related to security, economic hardships, and inequality.

The report also highlighted the difficulties faced by rural youth who lack reliable internet access, saying that the digital divide continues to limit educational and employment opportunities for many young people.

Calling for greater investment in Pakistan’s youth, the UNFPA urged policymakers to expand digital skills training and create better employment opportunities. It emphasized that population policy should not focus solely on increasing or reducing population numbers but should instead prioritize people’s rights, informed choices, and access to opportunities.

The report concludes that empowering young people through education, technology, and economic inclusion will be essential for Pakistan’s long-term development and sustainable growth.
