New Delhi (Saturday, June 21, 2025): The Indian government has reaffirmed its rigid stance, declaring that the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will not be reinstated.

In a firm statement, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah announced that India will never restore the treaty and that the waters previously flowing to Pakistan will now be diverted for internal use.

Speaking in an interview with Indian media, Amit Shah stated that the water which currently flows into Pakistan will instead be redirected to Rajasthan, and a new canal system is being constructed for this purpose. “Pakistan will not receive any water to which it has no rightful claim,” he asserted.

It is important to note that on April 22, a shooting incident in Pahalgam, a tourist site in Indian-administered Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian citizens. Without presenting any evidence, India blamed Pakistan for the attack and unilaterally suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.

Pakistan maintains that the Indus Waters Treaty is an international agreement, brokered in 1960 with the mediation of the World Bank, and cannot be revoked unilaterally by India. The treaty, signed by both countries, can only be altered with mutual consent.

This latest development significantly escalates tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and raises serious concerns about regional water security and diplomatic stability.
