Peshawar / Lahore (Monday, July 21, 2025) — The process of polling for Senate elections is currently underway in both the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab Assemblies. These elections are taking place under a politically charged atmosphere, with security beefed up and media coverage restricted, especially in KP.

According to official reports, polling in the Punjab Assembly began promptly at 9:00 AM and is scheduled to continue until 4:00 PM. In contrast, polling in the KP Assembly commenced at 11:00 AM and will also conclude at 4:00 PM. These elections are of significant importance, as they will fill vacant Senate seats, including general, technocrat, and women’s reserved seats.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, strict security measures have been implemented around the provincial assembly. A heavy deployment of police personnel has been stationed inside and outside the assembly building. The Election Commission has imposed a media blackout inside the KP Assembly during the polling process, preventing any real-time coverage.

Despite the restrictions, notable figures such as the Chief Minister, opposition leaders, candidates, and assembly members arrived at the venue early. The political temperature remains high due to the presence of several independent and disgruntled candidates, especially from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has recently witnessed internal splits.

Sharifullah, the Provincial Election Commissioner of Punjab, has been appointed as the presiding officer for the Senate election in the provincial assembly. According to early information, government members Rana Muhammad Arshad and Pir Ashraf Rasool have already cast their votes. Among the opposition, Ashifa, Riaz Fatyana, Ali Imtiaz Warraich, and Rana Shahbaz have also exercised their voting rights. Out of the 369 total members of the Punjab Assembly, 130 votes had been cast as of the latest reports.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the contest is more complex. According to the Election Commission’s official list, 25 candidates are contesting for 11 Senate seats. These include 7 general seats, 2 seats reserved for technocrats, and 2 for women.

The breakdown of candidates is as follows:

• General Seats (7): PTI has fielded prominent names such as Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Afridi, and Noor-ul-Haq Qadri.
• The opposition’s candidates for general seats include Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F)’s Maulana Atta-ul-Haq Darwish, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s Talha Mehmood, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Niaz Ahmed.
• Technocrat Seats (2): A total of 5 candidates are in the running.
• Women’s Reserved Seats (2): 4 candidates are contesting, including PPP’s Rubina Khalid, PTI’s Rubina Naz and Mehwish Ali. The list also includes PTI’s estranged member Ayesha Bano.

Despite the large number of candidates, many have withdrawn their nominations either voluntarily or under political agreements. A compromise has reportedly been reached between the government and opposition to allocate 6 and 5 seats, respectively, without direct contestation — an arrangement that helps avoid a heated and uncertain polling process.

PTI’s internal rift continues to play a role in the election dynamics. Dissident candidate Khurram Zeeshan has not withdrawn his nomination, indicating a potential upset. Additionally, the list of candidates includes other PTI dissidents such as Irfan Saleem and Waqas Orakzai. These internal divisions within the party may impact voting patterns and alliances on polling day.
