Punjab Floods Worsen: Hundreds of Villages Submerged in Shujaabad, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur and Vehari
The flood situation in Punjab has entered a critical phase as torrential rains and heavy water flows from rivers continue to wreak havoc in multiple districts. According to the Federal Flood Commission, the Chenab River at Panjnad Barrage has reached a “very high flood level,” and forecasts warn that in the coming 24 to 48 hours, Guddu Barrage will also experience an extremely high flood situation. This has put large parts of southern Punjab under severe threat, with hundreds of villages already inundated.
Chenab River and Multan Division Hit Hard
The city of Multan and its surrounding areas are currently facing significant challenges due to the swelling Chenab River. Dozens of villages in Head Muhammad Wala and Sher Shah remain submerged under deep floodwaters, with residents displaced and left with little choice but to abandon their homes. In Shujaabad and Jalalpur Pirwala, the crisis has forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate. Entire settlements are underwater, and residents are seeking refuge in temporary shelters and open fields.
In Chachran, hundreds of houses have collapsed and been washed away by the force of the river, while thousands of acres of crops have been completely destroyed. The floods have also submerged connecting roads, cutting off access between towns and villages and isolating residents. Farmers, who were preparing to harvest their seasonal crops, now face devastating losses, raising fears of severe food shortages in the months ahead.
Breaches and Escalating Damage
One of the most alarming developments occurred in Sadiqabad, where the Zemindara embankment broke at Nabi Shah. As a result, water rushed into populated areas, leaving families scrambling for safety. In Shujaabad, too, the floodwaters have created chaos. A protective bund in Basti Dhondo suffered a massive breach that widened to 240 feet, allowing torrents of water to sweep into nearby villages. This breach has worsened the plight of already struggling communities, who now face total submersion of homes and agricultural land.
Jalalpur Pirwala continues to suffer from rising flood levels, and Sher Shah has seen several neighborhoods inundated. Meanwhile, in Uch Sharif, low-lying riverine areas are under heavy floodwater, with rescue operations ongoing late into the night. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to evacuate stranded residents, but the sheer scale of the crisis has stretched resources thin.
Rajanpur and Kacha Areas Under Siege
Rajanpur has been hit hard, especially the “Kacha” areas along the riverbanks. Thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes as water swept through villages. Areas such as Rojhan, Bangla Icha, Sonmiani, and Kot Mithan have reported severe damage, with livestock drowned and entire communities displaced. Local authorities revealed that more than 110,000 people and over 100,000 animals have already been relocated to safer areas. Flood relief camps have been set up, providing food, medical assistance, and temporary shelter.
Modern technology, including the use of drones, is being deployed in ongoing rescue operations. Rescue teams are identifying stranded families in remote villages and guiding boats and emergency workers to bring them to safety. Despite these efforts, thousands remain in dire conditions, without adequate food, clean water, or medical care.
Vehari and Rahim Yar Khan Face Major Flooding
The situation in Vehari is equally grim. More than 100 villages in the district are engulfed by floodwaters, while over 76,000 acres of cultivated land has been submerged. Farmers in Vehari, who depend almost entirely on agriculture for their livelihoods, now face massive economic setbacks. Crops of cotton, sugarcane, and rice have been destroyed, adding to the region’s financial strain.
Rahim Yar Khan has been struck by extremely high flood levels in the Indus River. Dozens of villages and settlements are under water, and residents are trapped inside their homes. Many have climbed onto rooftops, waiting for boats or rescue teams to arrive. The district administration has appealed for urgent assistance as water levels continue to rise.
Humanitarian Challenges and Relief Efforts
The Punjab administration is struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster. Officials are working with rescue agencies, the military, and local volunteers to coordinate relief efforts. Over a hundred thousand evacuees are now housed in relief camps, but shortages of food, clean drinking water, medicines, and sanitation facilities are growing concerns. Diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, and skin infections are beginning to spread among displaced populations, especially children.
The livestock losses are also staggering, threatening long-term food security and economic stability in the flood-hit districts. Many families who lost their homes also lost their cattle, which were often their only assets and means of livelihood. Relief workers warn that without urgent medical supplies and veterinary assistance, the damage could escalate further.
A Crisis of National Scale
The current disaster in Punjab reflects the larger vulnerability of Pakistan to floods. The country’s river system, particularly during monsoon seasons, places millions of people at risk. Climate change has worsened the situation, with erratic rainfall patterns and glacial melt increasing the frequency and intensity of flooding. Analysts note that better planning, improved infrastructure such as stronger embankments, and early-warning systems could have mitigated some of the losses now being witnessed.
For now, the people of Punjab continue to face rising waters, displacement, and uncertainty. The government has promised further relief measures, but with so many districts simultaneously affected, the challenge remains immense. The next 48 hours are critical, particularly for Guddu Barrage, which may face dangerously high flood levels. Should the situation worsen, even larger populations may be forced to evacuate.
As families watch their homes vanish beneath the waters, Punjab’s flood crisis serves as another reminder of the urgent need for climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and sustainable river management in Pakistan.
