Like many parts of the world, breast cancer has become the most common type of cancer among women in Pakistan, posing a serious health threat that can prove fatal if not diagnosed and treated in time. However, medical experts emphasize that breast cancer is completely curable if detected at an early stage.

According to Dr. Khaleel Ahmed Mehr, an oncologist and chemotherapy specialist at Jinnah Hospital Karachi and River City Hospital Sukkur, the major reason behind the alarming rise in breast cancer cases is the lack of timely screening and awareness among women. “Breast cancer is not an immediate death sentence,” he said. “With early diagnosis, modern treatment, and proper care, thousands of women can recover and live healthy lives.”

Dr. Mehr explained that self-examination plays a crucial role in early detection. Every woman, he advised, should examine herself once a month and look for any unusual lumps, swelling, pain, or changes in skin color or texture. If any of these symptoms appear, she should immediately consult a qualified doctor. He further mentioned that while the disease is most common among women over the age of 40, recent data indicates an increasing number of younger women are also being diagnosed.

He cautioned that ignoring the initial symptoms of breast cancer is one of the biggest mistakes women make. “The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the chances of complete recovery,” he noted. To ensure early detection, women should undergo a mammography or ultrasound test at least once a year.

Discussing treatment, Dr. Mehr emphasized that chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy have become significantly more advanced and less painful over time. “With proper medical treatment, a positive mindset, and strong family support, patients can regain their health and confidence,” he said, adding that psychological strength and the encouragement of loved ones are as important as the medicines themselves.

The doctor urged that awareness campaigns and open discussions about breast cancer are essential, especially in rural areas, where cultural taboos often prevent women from seeking timely help. He stressed the importance of education, regular health check-ups, and destigmatizing cancer-related conversations, saying these steps can save countless lives each year.

Dr. Khaleel Ahmed Mehr concluded by saying that prevention and awareness are the most effective weapons against breast cancer. “If women perform regular self-examinations and seek professional advice without hesitation, we can drastically reduce mortality rates linked to this disease,” he said.
