Lahore has once again topped the global list of the world’s most polluted cities, with its air quality reaching hazardous levels that pose severe health risks to residents. Despite ongoing efforts and periodic warnings from authorities, the provincial capital of Punjab continues to struggle with dangerous smog conditions that have become an unfortunate seasonal reality for millions of people.

According to the latest air quality monitoring data, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 253, a level considered extremely unhealthy for all groups, including those without pre-existing health conditions. More alarming measurements were recorded in specific neighborhoods during the early morning hours. Before 7 a.m., the AQI at Lahore’s Burki Road surged to an astonishing 485, crossing well into the hazardous category. When the AQI rises above 300, it signifies a public health emergency where everyone is at risk of serious respiratory complications. An AQI nearing 500 reflects air so polluted that it severely restricts outdoor activity and demands urgent medical and administrative intervention.

The city’s poor air quality is not a new issue. Lahore has repeatedly appeared in the top ranks of the most polluted cities over the past several years, especially during the winter months. As temperatures cool and wind activity slows, pollutants become trapped near the ground, resulting in dense smog that reduces visibility and damages lung health. Industrial emissions, vehicle smoke, brick kilns, construction dust, and crop stubble burning in nearby agricultural regions all contribute to this toxic atmosphere. Population growth, unregulated urban expansion, and the lack of cleaner transportation alternatives have only intensified the crisis.

Children, the elderly, and patients suffering from asthma, lung disease, heart conditions, or weakened immune systems are most at risk. Doctors in Lahore warn that rising hospital visits due to breathing difficulties, throat irritation, chest infections, and eye inflammation increase significantly whenever air quality deteriorates. Prolonged exposure can lead to chronic respiratory disease, reduced lung function, and increased risk of cardiovascular illness. Even healthy individuals face risks such as persistent coughing, headaches, and fatigue. Public health experts emphasize that the current situation cannot be taken lightly, as every additional day of exposure contributes to long-term damage.

Schools in several parts of Lahore have resorted to restricting outdoor activities. Parents and guardians are being advised to limit children’s time outside, especially during early morning and evening hours when smog concentration is highest. Medical professionals recommend wearing properly fitted masks, particularly N95 or KN95 respirators, since ordinary cloth masks offer little protection against microscopic particulate matter. Avoiding exercize outdoors and keeping windows closed during peak pollution hours are also essential precautions. Those with existing health concerns are urged to keep necessary medications on hand and seek immediate care if they experience shortness of breath or severe coughing.

Environmental activists argue that although emergency directives and short-term shutdowns of polluting sources may provide temporary relief, they do not address the root causes of Lahore’s pollution. Meaningful progress requires long-term structural reforms, including stricter enforcement of emissions laws, transition to cleaner fuels, enhanced public transportation, and improved waste management practices. Experts stress that tackling pollution demands coordination not only within the city but also with nearby regions where agricultural burning spikes during the harvest season. Without regional cooperation, smog will continue to drift into Lahore, undermining localized policy interventions.
