The situation in Punjab’s raging rivers remains critical as floodwaters continue to swell, submerging hundreds of villages and leaving more than 1.5 million people displaced and vulnerable. The water level has not returned to normal, and fresh waves of flooding have pushed deeper into human settlements. The official death toll has climbed to 30, while thousands remain stranded without food, shelter, or medical care.

Chenab River Brings Devastation Across Districts

At Head Trimmu, the water flow of the Chenab River was recorded at a staggering 249,000 cusecs, marking a sharp increase. According to the Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore, both Head Qadirabad and Head Khanki are experiencing high flood levels. The water flow has risen to 229,000 cusecs at Khanki and 203,000 cusecs at Qadirabad.

After wreaking havoc in Sialkot, Wazirabad, and Chiniot, the Chenab’s flood surge has now entered Jhang district. The floodwaters have drowned 180 villages, destroyed crops spread over hundreds of acres, and washed away key connecting roads, cutting off entire communities from the rest of the province. Hundreds of families have been forced to flee their homes, while many remain trapped. Rescue boats are ferrying stranded residents to safer locations. However, countless women, children, and elderly victims have spent the night under the open sky, with little access to food or drinking water.

Desperate survivors have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for immediate assistance, stating that no relief or official help has yet reached them.

Flood Threat Intensifies in Multan

In Multan, floodwaters have entered agricultural lands in Tehsil Shujaabad, affecting 140 more villages. Crops have been completely inundated, and local farmers are facing the risk of irrecoverable financial loss.

Commissioner Multan, Aamir Karim, has warned of a potential catastrophe on Monday, as an estimated 800,000 cusec flood wave is expected to pass through the Chenab River near Multan. He added that 700,000 cusecs from Head Trimmu and 90,000 cusecs from the Ravi River could converge in the Multan region. Authorities are preparing emergency strategies, and in case of extreme necessity, a controlled breach at Head Muhammadwala might be carried out. Head Muhammadwala has a holding capacity of one million cusecs, but officials fear the incoming water may dangerously test its limits.

Sutlej River Overflowing at Critical Points

Meanwhile, the Sutlej River remains equally dangerous. At Ganda Singh Wala, the river recorded an extremely high flood with a flow of 253,068 cusecs. Similarly, at Head Sulemanki, water flow was noted at 154,219 cusecs, again placing the area under a high flood alert.

Several villages near Ganda Singh Wala remain submerged, while in Bahawalnagar, many flood victims are refusing to abandon their homes despite repeated warnings from the administration. Local authorities are urging residents to evacuate immediately to avoid further loss of life.

Ravi River Reaches Dangerous Levels

The Ravi River is also under immense pressure. At Balloki Headworks, rising water levels forced officials to open all spillways. The water flow at Balloki reached 211,395 cusecs, still categorised as an “extremely high flood.”

Surrounding villages and livestock have been severely affected, while crops have been wiped out. In Narowal and Nankana Sahib, river embankments have broken, sending floodwaters surging into both rural and urban areas.

Education Disrupted, Schools Closed

As a precautionary measure, the Punjab Education Department has ordered all schools in Pakpattan and Arifwala to remain closed from September 1 until further notice. The decision was made to ensure the safety of children and teachers in areas under immediate flood threat.

At Arifwala, river water has reached the protective embankments near Noora Bund, while rescue operations in Pakpattan are ongoing using boats to evacuate stranded families.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

So far, 30 people have lost their lives across Punjab due to flood-related incidents, ranging from drowning to building collapses and electrocutions. More than 1.5 million residents have been directly affected by the calamity. Thousands of acres of standing crops, including cotton, sugarcane, and rice, have been destroyed, dealing a severe blow to farmers who were already grappling with rising costs of agricultural inputs.

Internet services in many flood-hit areas have been suspended, further isolating victims from contacting their relatives or authorities for help. Relief operations are underway, but progress remains slow due to damaged roads, collapsed bridges, and the sheer scale of the disaster.

Survivors Demand Government Support

Eyewitness accounts from affected regions reveal the growing frustration among flood survivors. Families complain that no adequate arrangements for food, drinking water, or medical treatment have been made. Many have taken refuge on elevated roads, railway tracks, and embankments, but survival under scorching heat and lack of sanitation has become increasingly difficult.

“We have nothing left—our homes, fields, and cattle are gone. Even tonight, we have to sleep under the sky without food. The government has abandoned us,” said a resident of Jhang.

The Road Ahead: Urgent Need for Relief

With weather forecasts warning of more rain in upper catchment areas, the threat of additional flooding looms large. Experts have called for immediate large-scale relief and rehabilitation efforts, including provision of food, tents, clean water, and medical facilities. Disaster management authorities have been urged to set up more relief camps and strengthen embankments to protect vulnerable districts.

Unless urgent action is taken, the humanitarian crisis in Punjab may escalate further. The floods have already become one of the most severe disasters to hit the province in recent years, with long-term economic, social, and agricultural consequences.
