In a major shift to its communication platforms, Meta has announced that it will officially discontinue the Messenger desktop application for both macOS and Windows starting December 15, 2025. The company confirmed that users will no longer be able to access Messenger through the desktop app after that date and will instead have to rely on Messenger.com or Facebook.com to continue their conversations.

According to a notification seen by users, Meta stated that “the Messenger app for desktop computers will be retired on December 15.” The company, however, did not specify the exact reason behind this decision, leaving room for speculation among tech analysts.

Users who currently use Messenger on their desktop systems have begun receiving notifications prompting them to transition their conversations online and to securely store their existing chats before the shutdown.

Meta’s support documentation further explains that after December 15, users will no longer be able to open or sign in to the Messenger desktop app, as access will be completely blocked. To preserve chat history, users must enable Secure Storage — a feature designed to protect and back up encrypted conversations.
