PM Shehbaz arrives in London after UNGA visit

UNITED NATIONS: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif arrived in London on Saturday after leading Pakistan’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The prime minister is expected to spend a few days in London before departing for Islamabad.

During his hectic five-day visit to New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz addressed the 193-member General Assembly and held meetings with world leaders on regional and global security, as well as matters of bilateral interest.

He also met Pakistani-American businessmen and urged them to invest in Pakistan.

The prime minister held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is expected to visit Pakistan next month. Guterres is scheduled to complete his second five-year term on December 31, 2026.

In his address to the General Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz said dialogue and diplomacy must remain the preferred means of resolving conflicts. However, he warned India that any attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan’s share of river waters would be treated as an act of war.

Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the Global Development Initiative (GDI), describing it as an important platform for fostering solidarity, strengthening South-South cooperation and delivering tangible outcomes for developing countries.

He was addressing a high-level GDI meeting hosted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on the sidelines of the 81st UNGA session.

The prime minister praised the foresight behind the initiative, noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping had introduced the proposal three years ago at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when such an initiative was particularly needed.

In a statement broadcast on national television, Prime Minister Shehbaz said the objectives of the GDI complemented Pakistan’s own national economic transformation plan.

“Our cooperation with China also continues through the Belt and Road Initiative and its flagship project, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is now entering its second phase,” he said.
