OpenAI Set to Launch Its Own Web Browser

OpenAI — the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT — is now preparing to introduce its own web browser.

According to a new report by Reuters, OpenAI is aiming to target a key segment of Google’s business by launching this browser, which could be released in the coming weeks.

Sources cited in the report claim that OpenAI intends to make its services a core part of users’ personal and professional lives, and the web browser is a key part of that strategy.

The browser is expected to include several AI-powered features capable of automating various tasks for users. With direct access to web browsing data, it will become easier for OpenAI to enhance its AI tools and gather more user data.

The browser’s user interface is reportedly being designed similarly to Google’s AI Overviews, in order to encourage more interaction with AI-based tools like chatbots.

ChatGPT is currently used by over 500 million users weekly, but whether this new browser can pose a real challenge to Google Chrome remains uncertain — Chrome currently has an estimated 3 billion users.

The report also states that OpenAI’s browser will be built on Google’s open-source Chromium platform — the same foundation used by Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera browsers.

Previously, OpenAI had also launched its own AI-powered search engine. The company announced this search engine in May 2024 and officially rolled it out for users in November 2024.
