Heavy Snowfall in Azad Kashmir’s Neelum Valley Disrupts Connectivity, Lipa Valley Cut Off from Hattian Bala

Azad Kashmir: Continuous snowfall in Azad Kashmir’s Neelum Valley has severely disrupted normal life, cutting off several remote areas from the rest of the region. Lipa Valley has been completely disconnected from the district headquarters Hattian Bala due to blocked roads, prompting emergency rescue operations by the Pakistan Army.

According to official sources, persistent snowfall over the past several days has led to road closures, landslides, and communication breakdowns in upper parts of Neelum Valley. The situation worsened in Lipa Valley, where heavy snow accumulation made ground access impossible, isolating the area from surrounding regions.

Following the disruption of land routes, the Pakistan Army carried out a timely and successful helicopter rescue operation to assist residents in need. Officials confirmed that a female patient suffering from serious medical complications was safely airlifted from Lipa Valley and transported to the Rawalpindi Military Hospital (RMH) for urgent treatment.

“The patient was evacuated swiftly and safely despite challenging weather conditions,” officials said, adding that the helicopter operation was conducted as part of the army’s ongoing humanitarian assistance efforts in snowbound areas.

Residents of Neelum and Lipa valleys have been facing extreme hardships due to prolonged snowfall, including shortages of food supplies, heating fuel, and medical facilities. Local authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.

Meanwhile, severe winter conditions have also affected other northern and mountainous regions of the country. The Astore Valley Road has remained closed for the past four days, cutting off access to several villages and towns. Authorities said snow-clearing operations are underway, but continuous snowfall has slowed progress.

In Parachinar, residents are enduring freezing temperatures described by locals as “bone-chilling cold.” Snowfall and extreme cold have resulted in the closure of multiple connecting roads, while electricity supply has been suspended in several areas due to damage to power infrastructure and transmission lines.

The cold wave has significantly disrupted daily life in Parachinar, with schools closed, businesses operating intermittently, and residents struggling to cope with prolonged power outages amid sub-zero temperatures. Local administrations are working to restore electricity and reopen roads as soon as weather conditions allow.

Similarly, the situation in Tirah Valley has deteriorated due to heavy snowfall, which has severely affected normal life. Roads remain blocked, restricting the movement of people and essential supplies. Residents have reported difficulties in accessing healthcare and basic necessities.

In response to the worsening conditions, the Pakistan Army has continued its relief and assistance operations in Tirah and other affected regions. Army units are providing food supplies, medical aid, and logistical support to stranded populations, particularly in remote and high-altitude areas.

Officials stated that relief teams are operating under extremely harsh conditions to ensure that vulnerable communities receive timely assistance. “Our priority is to support the affected population and prevent any humanitarian crisis,” an army spokesperson said.

Meteorological authorities have forecast that snowfall may continue intermittently in higher elevations of Azad Kashmir and northern regions over the coming days. They warned that further snowfall could exacerbate road blockages and advised travelers to avoid mountainous routes unless absolutely necessary.

Disaster management authorities have placed emergency response teams on high alert and instructed district administrations to ensure the availability of snow-clearing machinery, medical teams, and relief supplies. Helicopter support remains on standby for emergency evacuations in inaccessible areas.

Local residents have praised the efforts of rescue teams and the Pakistan Army for their swift response. “Without the helicopter rescue, the patient’s life could have been at serious risk,” said a resident of Lipa Valley. “We are grateful for the timely help.”

The ongoing winter spell has once again highlighted the vulnerability of remote mountainous communities to extreme weather conditions. Experts have emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, better winter preparedness, and early warning systems to minimize disruption during heavy snowfall.

Authorities have urged citizens in snow-affected areas to cooperate with local administrations, conserve supplies, and report emergencies promptly. As snowfall continues, relief agencies remain engaged in monitoring the situation and extending assistance wherever needed.
