A PhD student at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Alec Falkenham, has developed a new cream for tattoo removal called Bisphosphonate Liposomal Tattoo Removal Cream. This innovative solution promises a quicker, safer, and less painful alternative to traditional laser treatments.

Tattoo ink is absorbed by macrophages, a type of white blood cell in the skin. Some of these cells remain active, while others become dormant, giving tattoos their lasting visibility. The new cream uses liposomes containing bisphosphonates to specifically target the ink-containing macrophages.

When new macrophages arrive, they ingest the liposomes, which in turn eliminate the ink-filled cells. Gradually, this process removes the tattoo pigment from the skin.

The major advantages of this method include:

• Less pain: Unlike laser treatments, which can be highly painful and leave scars, the cream is minimally invasive.
• Lower cost: If the raw materials and production are affordable, the treatment can be cheaper than traditional laser sessions.
