Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Condemns Attack on Russian President’s Residence

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the reported attack targeting the official residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing solidarity with the Russian government and people and rejecting all forms of violence that threaten peace and security.

In an official statement issued from Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the incident, describing it as a dangerous act that undermines ongoing efforts toward peace and stability. He conveyed Pakistan’s support to Russia at what he termed a sensitive time, when diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing conflict are under way.

“Such heinous attacks, especially at a time when efforts for peace are being pursued, pose a serious threat to regional and global stability,” the prime minister said. “We categorically reject all forms of violence that endanger peace and security.”

The prime minister’s remarks come amid heightened tensions following Russia’s claim that the official residence of President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region was targeted in a Ukrainian attack. Russian authorities have characterized the alleged incident as an act of state-sponsored terrorism, a description that has further escalated already strained relations between Moscow and Kyiv.

According to Russian officials, the attack involved the launch of 91 long-range drones aimed at the presidential residence. Russian air defense systems reportedly intercepted and destroyed all incoming drones before they could cause damage. While no casualties or structural losses were officially reported, the scale of the alleged attack has raised serious concerns within Russia’s political and security establishment.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow views the targeting of the president’s official residence as a grave provocation. He emphasized that Russia reserves the right to respond and reiterated that such actions could have far-reaching consequences for regional security. “An appropriate response will be given,” Lavrov said, while also noting that Russia is reassessing its approach to ongoing peace-related engagements.

In light of the incident, Russia has announced that it will review its stance on continuing peace talks, signaling a potential shift in diplomatic strategy. While Moscow has not officially withdrawn from dialogue efforts, officials have indicated that the attack has prompted serious reconsideration of how and under what conditions negotiations can proceed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his statement, stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to resolving conflicts. He warned that attacks on high-profile state targets not only escalate hostilities but also undermine international efforts to bring warring parties to the negotiating table.

Pakistan’s condemnation reflects its long-standing position of advocating peaceful resolution of disputes and opposing actions that could widen conflicts. Islamabad has consistently called for restraint and dialogue in global crises, emphasizing respect for international law and the protection of civilian and state institutions.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin also reportedly held a telephone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders discussed the evolving situation. According to Russian sources, President Putin informed Trump that while Russia remains open to working with the United States toward peace, it is simultaneously reassessing its participation in peace talks in light of recent developments.

The call underscores the broader international implications of the incident, as major global powers remain closely engaged in diplomatic efforts related to the conflict. Analysts say such high-level communications indicate that despite rising tensions, channels of dialogue between key stakeholders remain open.

International reactions to the reported attack have been cautious, with several countries urging restraint and calling for verification of facts. Diplomatic observers warn that incidents involving senior leadership or symbolic state locations carry a high risk of escalation if not handled with care.

In Pakistan, political analysts view Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s statement as part of Islamabad’s balanced foreign policy approach, which seeks to maintain constructive relations with major global powers while promoting peace and stability. Pakistan has historically maintained cordial ties with Russia and has expanded cooperation in recent years in areas such as energy, trade, and defense dialogue.

Experts also note that Pakistan’s condemnation of the attack aligns with its broader stance against terrorism in all forms, regardless of geography or political context. By rejecting violence and emphasizing peace, Islamabad aims to reinforce its image as a responsible member of the international community.

As the situation continues to evolve, global attention remains focused on how Russia will respond and whether diplomatic efforts can withstand the latest escalation. For now, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks add Pakistan’s voice to international calls for restraint, dialogue, and the rejection of actions that threaten global peace and security.
