Pakistan and Japan signed a grant agreement for a flood protection project in Sindh on Monday, under which Japan will provide a grant of 2.58 billion Japanese yen equivalent to approximately $16.4 million.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the project aims to strengthen flood protection infrastructure in Sindh and enhance the disaster resilience of communities vulnerable to flooding.

Under the project, the Old Abad dyke, located along the right bank of the Indus River in Larkana will be upgraded and strengthened to improve protection against floods.

The Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion were signed by Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim and Japanese Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi.

The grant agreement was signed by Additional Secretary Economic Affairs Sabina Qureshi and Senior Representative Japan International Cooperation (JICA) Sugawara Takayuki.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim said Japan was a longstanding and valued development partner of Pakistan and He appreciated Japan’s continued friendship, saying Pakistan highly valued Tokyo’s sustained commitment to the country’s socio-economic development.

The Japanese ambassador reaffirmed that Japan would continue to strengthen friendly relations and bilateral cooperation with Pakistan.
