Karachi, June 24, 2026: Acting on a confidential tip-off, police in Karachi’s Kemari district successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of banned and hazardous Indian gutka into the city from Balochistan. The operation was carried out by Maripur Police Station personnel, who intercepted a double-cabin vehicle allegedly being used to transport the contraband through illegal routes.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for Kemari Police, the raid was conducted after law enforcement officials received intelligence regarding the movement of a vehicle carrying a significant quantity of harmful Indian gutka. Acting swiftly on the information, police established surveillance and intercepted the suspect vehicle near the Chhatara Bypass area after it entered Karachi from the direction of Hub.

During the search of the vehicle, officers discovered that the gutka had been concealed in several secret compartments and hidden locations inside the double-cabin pickup. Police recovered a total of 268 packets containing 29,480 sachets of Indian gutka, a banned tobacco-related product considered hazardous to public health. Authorities estimated the value of the seized consignment to be in the millions of rupees.

Investigators revealed that the contraband was being transported from Hub, Balochistan, to Karachi through unpaved and unofficial routes in an apparent attempt to avoid law enforcement checkpoints and routine inspections. The use of remote dirt tracks and concealed compartments suggests that the smuggling operation was carefully planned and organized.

Police arrested the driver and alleged smuggler, identified as Saif-ur-Rehman, son of Abdul Ayas, on the spot. The suspect is believed to have played a direct role in the transportation and intended distribution of the prohibited substance within Karachi.

Authorities stated that a case has been registered against the accused under FIR No. 218/26, and further investigations are underway to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling network. Police are also attempting to determine the source of the gutka, its intended recipients, and whether the consignment was linked to a larger organized trafficking operation.

Law enforcement officials noted that the successful operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb the illegal trade of harmful tobacco products, which continue to pose serious health risks to consumers. Indian gutka, which contains a mixture of tobacco, areca nut, and other ingredients, has been banned in several regions due to its association with serious health conditions, including oral cancers and other diseases.

The Kemari Police spokesperson emphasized that authorities remain committed to taking strict action against individuals and groups involved in the smuggling, sale, and distribution of prohibited substances. Police also urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities related to narcotics, tobacco products, and other illegal goods.

Officials believe that continued intelligence-based operations and coordinated enforcement efforts will help dismantle smuggling networks operating between Balochistan and Karachi. The seizure is being viewed as a significant success in preventing a large quantity of hazardous material from reaching local markets and consumers.
