Mumbai: The government of the Indian state of Maharashtra has imposed a ban on the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks within 500 meters of schools, citing growing concerns over their increasing consumption among young people.

According to Indian media reports, the decision was taken in response to the rising popularity of highly caffeinated beverages among students and concerns about their potential impact on children’s health.

The reports said the ban was announced by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal during a session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after a question was raised by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute.

While addressing the assembly, Pachpute highlighted the alleged health risks associated with popular energy drinks, arguing that they can be highly addictive for school-going children and pose serious health concerns.

Following the discussion, Minister Narhari Zirwal announced that the existing restrictions around schools would be expanded to prohibit not only narcotic substances but also the sale of high-energy drinks within a 500-meter radius of educational institutions across the state.

The measure is intended to discourage the consumption of high-caffeine beverages among children and promote healthier habits in school environments.
