Sindh Local Govt amendment bill to be tabled in assembly
KARACHI: The Sindh Local Government Amendment Bill 2026 has been on the cards and expected to be tabled in the assembly.
The new bill is expected to introduce key amendments with regard to the tenure of mayors, chairmen and local councils.
The bill suggests that a letter addressing the election commission will be mandatory 120 days prior to the end of the tenure of the council.
The former mayor or chairman will continue to perform duty on completion of office term until the new mayor or chairman being elected.
The former mayor or chairman could use the council’s powers.
The legislation also proposes enhancing powers of deputy mayor or voice chairman, who will be convenor of the council’s session. In absence of the deputy mayor or voice chairman, the government could delegate a member of their duties.
Proposed law also suggests appointment of the municipal commissioner for municipal corporations.
The bill also proposes constitution of a reconciliation forum for dispute resolution.
