Disagreements between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the government over budget proposals continue, with no significant progress reported in the latest round of talks.

According to sources, the meeting held on Wednesday between PPP leaders and the government to discuss the federal budget ended without any breakthrough. The issue is now expected to be taken up at the senior leadership level of both sides.

Sources said that a meeting between top leadership is likely within the next one or two days, during which Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar is expected to meet PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and President Asif Ali Zardari.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to convene the budget session on June 10. Officials said that regardless of the outcome of negotiations, the budget will be presented on the scheduled date.

On the other hand, government sources claimed that PPP has been assured that no major legislation will be introduced before the budget session. They added that the budget will be presented after the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting, which will take place after Bilawal Bhutto’s return from Gilgit-Baltistan.

It is worth noting that the government had earlier postponed the federal budget presentation initially scheduled for June 5. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has also indicated that efforts will be made to avoid introducing any new taxes in the upcoming budget.
