Pakistan: Widespread dense fog across multiple regions of Pakistan has caused significant disruption to transportation networks, leading to motorway closures, partial suspension of flight schedules, and traffic accidents. Authorities in Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported that the extremely low visibility has created dangerous driving conditions, prompting precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

In Lahore, the fog has partially affected flight operations, particularly for flights departing to international destinations. Several flights have experienced delays, causing inconvenience to passengers and airlines alike. Airport officials have urged travelers to check their flight schedules before heading to the airport and to allow extra time for travel due to expected traffic congestion caused by the fog.

The dense fog has also severely impacted motorway travel across the country. Visibility has dropped to as low as 10 to 30 meters in some areas, forcing authorities to close key sections of major highways. On the M2 motorway, the stretch from Thokar Niaz Beg to Chakri has been shut, while on the M3 motorway, the route from Faisalpur to Darkhana remains closed. The M4 section from Pindi Bhattian to Sher Shah has also been blocked.

Further closures have been reported on the M5 motorway, from Sher Shah to Sukkur, and on the M14 motorway, from Injra to Isa Khel. In addition, visibility has remained extremely poor on multiple stretches between Sehwan and Larkana, significantly affecting traffic flow and raising concerns about road safety. Motorists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to adhere to speed limits and traffic warnings to reduce the risk of accidents.

The hazardous conditions have already led to tragic incidents. Near Samah Satta, a fog-related collision involving a truck and a motorcycle resulted in the death of the motorcycle rider and left two other individuals injured. Emergency services were dispatched to the site promptly, and authorities have warned drivers to exercise extreme caution, particularly during early morning and late evening hours when fog density is often at its peak.

Meteorologists attribute the severe fog to a combination of low temperatures, high humidity, and calm wind conditions prevailing in the region. The thick fog is expected to persist for the next few days, with some areas experiencing even further reduction in visibility during early mornings and nights. Weather experts have issued warnings for travelers and residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories to minimize risks.

Authorities in Punjab and Sindh have deployed traffic police and emergency response teams on critical stretches of motorways and national highways. Barricades, hazard signs, and speed control measures have been implemented to reduce the likelihood of multi-vehicle collisions. Drivers are being urged to maintain safe distances, use fog lights, and avoid overtaking on highways during low-visibility conditions.

In addition to road and air travel disruptions, the fog has also impacted public life in urban areas. Commuters in major cities, including Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, have reported slower traffic and longer travel times. Schools and businesses have been advised to adjust schedules if conditions worsen, while health experts have reminded vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, to take precautions against respiratory issues often aggravated by dense fog.

The aviation authorities have confirmed that while domestic flights are mostly operational, international departures and arrivals are facing delays due to poor visibility. Airlines are coordinating with airport control towers to manage schedules and minimize disruptions, but passengers are encouraged to remain flexible and anticipate extended waiting times.

Road safety officials have also highlighted the importance of vehicle maintenance during foggy conditions. Headlights, tail lights, and fog lamps should be functional, and drivers are advised to avoid sudden braking or lane changes. Emergency kits, including reflective triangles and warning signs, are recommended for all motorists traveling long distances during this period.
