PTI Leaders Sentenced to 10 Years in May 9 Case, Shah Mahmood Qureshi Acquitted
LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore has delivered its verdict in another case related to the violent incidents of May 9, sentencing several senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders to prison while acquitting former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
The verdict was announced by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill at Kot Lakhpat Jail, where proceedings in the high-profile case were conducted. The case concerned allegations related to the burning of police vehicles during the unrest that erupted across the country on May 9, 2023.
According to the court’s decision, PTI leaders Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mahmoodur Rasheed, Omar Cheema, and Ejaz Chaudhry were each sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment after being found guilty in connection with the case.
However, the court acquitted Shah Mahmood Qureshi, ruling that the evidence presented against him was insufficient to establish criminal liability in the matter. His acquittal marks a significant development given his status as one of PTI’s most prominent leaders.
The May 9 incidents followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and led to widespread protests in various parts of Pakistan. During the demonstrations, government buildings, military installations, and public property were attacked or damaged, prompting authorities to launch extensive investigations and legal proceedings against those allegedly involved.
Since then, multiple cases have been registered against PTI leaders, workers, and supporters under various charges, including terrorism, vandalism, arson, and attacks on state institutions. Courts across the country have been hearing these cases, resulting in a series of convictions, acquittals, and ongoing trials.
Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mahmoodur Rasheed, Omar Cheema, and Ejaz Chaudhry have remained among the prominent PTI figures facing prosecution over their alleged roles in the May 9 events. The court’s decision to sentence them to 10 years in prison represents one of the most significant rulings handed down in relation to the unrest.
Legal experts noted that the convicted leaders retain the right to challenge the verdict before higher courts. Their legal teams are expected to review the detailed judgment and consider filing appeals against the convictions and sentences.
The acquittal of Shah Mahmood Qureshi, meanwhile, is likely to be welcomed by PTI supporters, who have consistently maintained that many party leaders have been subjected to politically motivated cases. Government officials, however, have argued that all prosecutions are being conducted in accordance with the law and based on available evidence.
Political analysts believe the verdict could have important implications for Pakistan’s political landscape, particularly as PTI continues to navigate legal and organizational challenges. The sentencing of senior party figures may further affect the party’s leadership structure and political activities in the coming months.
The detailed judgment is expected to provide further insight into the court’s reasoning, including the evidence considered and the legal grounds for both the convictions and the acquittal.
The ruling adds another chapter to the ongoing legal proceedings stemming from the May 9 disturbances, which remain among the most consequential and controversial events in Pakistan’s recent political history. Appeals and further judicial review are likely to shape the final outcome of the case in the months ahead.
