How Strains Emerged in Trump–Modi Relations: U.S. Newspaper Reveals Backstory

A leading U.S. newspaper has shed light on the roots of tension between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that Modi’s refusal to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize and his resistance to Trump’s narrative on peace efforts between India and Pakistan were central to the fallout.

The report, based on interviews with dozens of senior figures in Washington and New Delhi, notes that the strain began in June 2019 when President Trump phoned Modi to highlight his role in de-escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan. Trump reportedly expressed pride in the peace effort, claiming that Pakistan was preparing to nominate him for the Nobel Prize. He pressed Modi to do the same.

However, Modi rebuffed the request. According to the report, Modi asserted that any resolution to the standoff with Pakistan had come through direct negotiations between New Delhi and Islamabad, and not due to American mediation. This claim directly undercut Trump’s narrative of playing peacemaker in South Asia.

The newspaper recounts that while Trump brushed aside Modi’s remarks during the call, the Indian Prime Minister’s refusal to endorse Trump for the Nobel Prize introduced bitterness into their relationship. The friction spilled into other areas, most notably the U.S.–India trade talks, which began to stall amid disagreements.

Analysts cited in the report warn that the dispute could have long-term strategic consequences. Specifically, it may push India to deepen ties with America’s rivals, Beijing and Moscow, at a time when Washington has sought to bolster partnerships in Asia as a counterweight to China’s growing influence.

Indeed, the timing is notable: Prime Minister Modi is currently on a diplomatic visit to China, where he is expected to meet both President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Such engagements highlight India’s continued balancing act between Washington and other major powers.

The account adds fresh perspective to the Trump–Modi dynamic, which was once portrayed as a close bond, particularly after Trump’s appearance alongside Modi at the “Howdy Modi” rally in Texas (2019). Yet, behind the scenes, personal ego, recognition on the world stage, and diverging diplomatic priorities appear to have driven a wedge between the two leaders.
