Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has resigned form his office after submiting his resignation to the Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh. 

His resignation letter has reached the Parliament Secretariat. In his resignation letter, the President of Bangladesh Mohammad Shahabuddin mentioned his physical illness and wrote that he is suffering from various health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. 
Mentioning that he had undergone bypass surgery on his heart earlier, he said that a recent health check-up had diagnosed him with a disease called Autonomic Neuropathy; due to which he occasionally becomes unconscious for some time.

He further wrote that due to the prevalence of these diseases and physical and mental incapacity, it is not possible for him to perform the duties of an important constitutional post like the President and he needs long-term treatment.  In such a situation, he announced his resignation from the post of President in accordance with the provisions of Article 50(3) of the Constitution of Bangladesh.

According to Article 54 of Chapter 1 of Part Four of the Constitution, if the office of the President falls vacant or if he is unable to perform his duties due to absence or illness, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh shall serve as the Acting President until a new President is elected.

Mohammad Shahabuddin, elected during the Awami League government, took office as President in April 2023. Shahabuddin is the only person who has held a top constitutional post even after the bloody July uprising. Mohammad Shahabuddin served as President under three governments: the Awami League, the interim government, and most recently the BNP.
