KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned four individuals for allegedly spreading false and defamatory content on digital and social media platforms targeting Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

The notices were issued following a complaint submitted by Memon’s lawyer against individuals allegedly involved in circulating fabricated and defamatory material through social media accounts.

The agency issued a call-up notice to Syed Abdullah, directing him to appear before the NCCIA on August 13, while Amin Qureshi has been summoned along with his digital device and original computerised national identity card. Bilal bin Nasrullah has also received a notice over the alleged sharing of defamatory material, while Karachi resident Ubaid Qureshi has been called in by the cybercrime agency for questioning.

According to the complaint, the four individuals are allegedly among those involved in disseminating false and defamatory content through social media accounts. ources said a forensic audit of the relevant social media accounts has also been launched, while an administrator of a Facebook page involved in a campaign related to the Mir Raza case has apologised to Sharjeel Memon.

The NCCIA is also investigating other individuals suspected of being involved in the alleged campaign and is working to identify those responsible for spreading the material online.

Memon moved NCCIA over ‘defamation’

The Mir Raza Ali case has come under renewed scrutiny after his family rejected the initial theory that he had died by suicide. Raza went missing on July 28 and his body was recovered the following day near Gulistan-e-Jauhar. The case was initially linked to financial difficulties, debt and monetary disputes, but the family raised concerns over the circumstances of his death. A court subsequently ordered his exhumation at Tariq Road graveyard under a medical board. A post-mortem later found that Raza had been shot in the back and had signs of torture, strengthening the family’s demand for a murder investigation.

Against this, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon filed a complaint with the NCCIA on August 9, alleging a coordinated social media campaign targeting him and his son, Rawal Memon, in connection with the case. The complaint identified several Facebook pages allegedly involved in circulating false and defamatory claims and seeks a forensic examination of the accounts, including IP logs, device information and possible funding or coordination links.

Memon has rejected several claims circulating online and requested an independent inquiry under relevant provisions of PECA.
