Cupertino (Tech Desk) — Tech giant Apple Inc. has reportedly decided to drastically cut the production of its newly launched iPhone Air by as much as 80 percent, following a sharp decline in consumer demand that failed to meet the company’s lofty expectations.

The iPhone Air, introduced in September 2025, was touted as Apple’s slimmest iPhone ever, measuring just 5.6 millimeters thick. The model was designed to combine high-end performance with a sleek, ultra-light form factor, targeting users who prefer minimalist devices.

However, despite its initial buzz and social media hype, sales figures from the first fiscal quarter revealed a disappointing trend. Industry insiders say that demand for the iPhone Air fell well below projections, prompting Apple to reassess its production strategy for 2026.

According to supply-chain sources quoted in U.S. and Asian tech outlets, Apple has instructed its manufacturing partners in China and India to scale down production by nearly 80 percent for the coming year.

Analysts suggest that multiple factors contributed to the iPhone Air’s poor performance. Among them are:

• High price point, despite limited upgrades in performance compared to the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro.
• Battery life concerns, as the thinner design required a smaller battery.
• Market saturation, with many users preferring to wait for the next-generation iPhone 16 lineup expected in late 2026.
• Economic slowdown in key Asian and European markets that has reduced consumer spending on premium smartphones.

Tech analysts also note that Apple’s decision underscores a strategic shift — prioritizing its Pro and Pro Max models, which continue to dominate sales and generate higher profit margins.

“Apple took a bold risk with the iPhone Air, but the market response shows consumers still value performance and battery life over ultra-thin aesthetics,” said Ben Wood, a senior analyst at CCS Insight.

Apple has not yet issued an official statement regarding the production cuts. However, insiders believe the company will continue limited manufacturing for select markets, focusing instead on upcoming flagship models and innovations in AI-powered iOS features and foldable display technology.

Despite the setback, Apple remains the world’s most valuable tech brand, and analysts expect it to rebound strongly with its next major release — possibly featuring the long-rumored “iPhone Ultra” with enhanced artificial intelligence integration and advanced camera systems.
