India’s national carrier Air India has incurred losses amounting to 4,000 crore Indian rupees due to the continued closure of Pakistani airspace for Indian aircraft. The situation has added significant financial pressure on the already struggling airline, prompting it to approach the Indian government for compensation and alternative operating solutions.

According to Indian media reports, New Delhi is now facing the economic fallout of the geopolitical setback suffered in the aftermath of its confrontation with Pakistan. After the conflict intensified earlier this year, Pakistan shut its airspace for Indian flights, a decision that has remained in effect, disrupting major flight operations. Indian media outlets have also acknowledged what they described as “India’s defeat in the airspace battle,” as the closure has forced Indian carriers to take longer routes, burning more fuel and increasing operational costs sharply.

Air India, which operates long-haul flights to Europe, the United States, Canada and parts of East Asia, has been among the hardest hit. The airline’s management has reportedly written to the Indian government requesting financial assistance of INR 4,000 crore to offset the unexpected expenses incurred due to detours. The extended flight paths have increased flight durations by several hours, raised fuel consumption, and placed additional strain on crew scheduling and aircraft maintenance cycles.

To mitigate the losses, Air India has also asked New Delhi for permission to reroute some of its international flights through Chinese airspace, hoping to cut down operational delays and save fuel. However, this proposal requires diplomatic coordination with China and may take time before it is approved or becomes practical. Indian media reports say the airline wants to avoid prolonged reliance on extended detour routes, which are not financially sustainable.

A key factor contributing to the losses has been India’s Operation Sandoor, during which the Pakistani government promptly responded by closing its airspace to all Indian aircraft. The move forced Indian carriers to adjust their flight paths dramatically, especially on westbound routes heading toward the Middle East, Europe, and North America. These flights have had to take longer trajectories via the Arabian Sea or Central Asia, adding millions of dollars to fuel expenses every week.

Aviation experts quoted in Indian reports stressed that the losses reflect deeper structural problems in India’s aviation policy. They noted that despite facing INR 4,000 crore in economic damage due to prolonged detours, Indian officials continue to highlight ambitious plans for air corridors linking India to Afghanistan and Central Asia—plans the experts described as “impractical and ironic” given the current airspace restrictions.

The closure of Pakistani airspace has not only affected Air India but has also impacted other Indian carriers, including Vistara and IndiGo, which previously used shorter Pakistan-overflight corridors. These airlines have also been forced to adopt alternative, costlier routes. This has led to a chain reaction of consequences: higher ticket prices, increased fuel requirements, stretched flight timings, passenger dissatisfaction, and accumulating operational delays.

Passengers traveling on long-haul routes have faced significant inconvenience due to extended flight durations. Delayed arrivals have affected connecting flights, hotel bookings, and onward travel plans, creating complaints across several international airports. Air India’s internal assessments reportedly show that overall operational efficiency has dropped sharply, and crew duty-hour limitations have become a major challenge on long westbound flights.

Meanwhile, Indian economic analysts have raised concerns that the financial shock could worsen Air India’s already fragile financial condition. Even after being taken over by the Tata Group, Air India has been working through a costly modernization and fleet expansion plan. A sudden loss of 4,000 crore rupees adds an unexpected burden and may force the airline to cut costs elsewhere, delay new services, or seek further government subsidies.
