Karachi to Face Severe Water Shortage as Dhabeji Pumping Station Shuts Down 7 Pumps

Karachi is expected to experience a significant water shortage as seven pumps at the Dhabeji Pumping Station will remain shut for 48 hours starting today. The temporary closure is part of an infrastructure upgrade, as authorities begin connecting a new pipeline to the city’s water supply network.

According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water Corporation, the work will commence this afternoon. Out of the total nine pumps at the station, seven will be turned off for two days. Water supply from these pumps is expected to be restored by April 27. However, two pumps will remain shut for an additional five days, which may continue to affect supply in some areas.

The shutdown will disrupt water supply across several parts of the city. Areas likely to be affected include North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, and Gulistan-e-Johar. In addition, parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Landhi, Korangi, and Chanesar Town will also face temporary suspension of water supply.

Authorities have also announced the closure of major hydrants, including NIPA, Safora, and Sakhi Hassan, during this period. These hydrants are often used as alternative sources of water, and their closure may further increase difficulties for residents.

Officials estimate that Karachi will face a daily shortfall of around 250 million gallons of water during the shutdown. Given the city’s already strained water system, this deficit is expected to create serious challenges, particularly in densely populated areas.

Residents have been advised to store water in advance and use it carefully during the disruption. Authorities stress that while the upgrade work may cause temporary inconvenience, it is necessary to improve the long-term efficiency and reliability of the city’s water supply system.
