Ankara: Turkey’s Minister of Transport, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, found himself at the center of public debate after a viral video showed him driving at extremely high speed on a highway. The minister was subsequently fined and later issued an apology to the nation.

According to foreign media, Uraloğlu uploaded a video in which he could be seen driving along the Ankara–Niğde highway. At one point, the speedometer of his car visibly climbed to 225 kilometers per hour (140 mph), far above the legal speed limit.

When the video began circulating widely on social media, the minister reposted it himself and acknowledged that he had been fined for exceeding the official speed limit. He admitted to briefly driving above the allowed speed while inspecting the highway.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Uraloğlu wrote:
“I drove on the Ankara–Niğde Highway to check its condition. For a short moment, unintentionally, I exceeded the speed limit. I was fined for this violation and I sincerely apologize.”

Reports confirm that the minister was fined 9,267 Turkish liras — approximately 225 US dollars — for the speeding violation.

It is important to note that Turkey’s highways have a maximum speed limit of 140 kilometers per hour (87 mph). Uraloğlu’s speed of 225 km/h was 85 km/h above the legal limit, raising public concerns about road safety, especially given his position as the minister responsible for transport and traffic regulations.

The incident has sparked a wave of reactions in Turkey. Some citizens praised the minister for openly admitting his mistake and paying the fine without seeking exemption. Others criticized him for setting a poor example, arguing that as a public official responsible for transport policy, he should be especially cautious about road safety rules.

Public figures and analysts also weighed in, suggesting that while transparency is commendable, ministers and leaders must be more mindful of their actions, as they set standards for ordinary citizens.

The apology and fine come at a time when Turkey has been working on reducing road accidents through stricter enforcement of traffic laws and public awareness campaigns. Official data shows that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal accidents on Turkish highways.

By acknowledging his error, Uraloğlu has attempted to frame the episode as a lesson in accountability. “No one is above the law,” he stated, emphasizing that traffic rules apply equally to every citizen, regardless of position.

The incident, however, has reignited debate over whether government officials should be held to even higher standards, since their behavior directly influences public attitudes toward safety and compliance.
