Islamabad: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), has strongly criticized Pakistan’s decision to join the Gaza Peace Board, calling it an effort solely aimed at gaining the approval of U.S. President Donald Trump. He pointed out that the government did not consult the elected parliament or any representative body before making this important decision.

Addressing the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that Pakistan’s foreign policy has historically been shaped under international pressure rather than national interest. He recalled that the founder of Pakistan took two historic steps regarding the establishment of Israel: the 1940 Resolution laid the foundation for Pakistan, and in 1948, when Israel came into existence, it was declared illegitimate by Pakistan’s founder. Rehman stressed that following these directives today seems far-fetched.

He criticized the government for making critical decisions without parliamentary oversight. “If the Assembly is not being consulted, was at least the Cabinet involved? When Bhutto went to sign the Shimla Agreement, the full Assembly was briefed. Following a method of consultation and consensus can resolve many complicated issues and secure a brighter future for the country,” he said.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman also argued that the Gaza Peace Board does not have any standing parallel to the United Nations or Security Council. While Palestinians are in a vulnerable situation, Pakistan should maintain a policy based on principle rather than external influence. “Joining the Gaza Peace Board is merely to gain Trump’s blessing,” he said, emphasizing that Pakistan’s participation is being presented as crucial but is driven by U.S. interests.

Additionally, he highlighted the challenges in areas under Taliban control, noting that residents and government officials there are forced to pay extortion to survive. He said that even 10 percent of the budget is allocated with this reality in mind, and that people’s homes and children are not secure in such regions.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman further stated that the system is being run under forced majorities disguised as democracy. He declared that February 8 will be observed as a “Black Day” to protest past injustices and to demand the reversal of certain legislations, particularly the privileges granted under the 27th Amendment.
