Washington/Moscow/Kyiv — A significant diplomatic development unfolded as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a 40-minute phone conversation, during which the Russian leader conveyed his readiness to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the near future.

According to European and Russian media reports, President Trump initiated the call while he was already engaged in discussions with the Ukrainian leader and European counterparts. The conversation, described by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as “cordial and constructive,” lasted around 40 minutes and covered key aspects of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Putin Ready to Meet Zelensky

During the call, President Putin reportedly told Trump that he was willing to sit down with Zelensky for direct talks. According to sources, preparations for such a meeting could lead to a Putin-Zelensky summit by the end of August, though the venue is yet to be finalized. Kremlin officials have suggested that groundwork for the meeting is already being laid out.

Putin’s willingness signals an important step towards potential de-escalation after months of strained ties between Moscow and Kyiv. Both sides have expressed interest in dialogue, but mutual distrust has slowed progress.

Trump’s Role and Peace Efforts

President Trump has positioned himself as a facilitator in the peace process, telling reporters earlier that he hoped for a trilateral summit involving himself, Putin, and Zelensky if conditions allowed. “We want to see lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, and the US is ready to help guarantee Ukraine’s security if a peace agreement is reached,” Trump was quoted as saying.

In his discussions at the White House with Zelensky and several European leaders earlier in the week, Trump emphasized the importance of constructive negotiations. He later described those meetings as “very useful” in laying the groundwork for broader peace initiatives.

Support for Direct Dialogue

Both Trump and Putin agreed that direct communication between Moscow and Kyiv is crucial. They also endorsed proposals to raise the level of representation in future peace talks, possibly involving foreign ministers or senior negotiators.

European officials have cautiously welcomed the development, noting that while many hurdles remain, Putin’s openness to meet Zelensky could mark a rare opportunity to de-escalate tensions.

What Comes Next

Although no exact venue or date has been confirmed, sources indicate that late August is being targeted for the first Putin-Zelensky face-to-face meeting. Diplomatic circles are closely monitoring whether this move will produce tangible outcomes or remain symbolic.

For Ukraine, security assurances remain a central demand, while Russia is likely to insist on guarantees regarding NATO expansion and economic sanctions. The US, by positioning itself as a guarantor, could play a pivotal role in bridging the trust gap.

A Glimmer of Hope

The proposed meeting comes amid an otherwise volatile backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Should the Putin-Zelensky summit take place, it would be one of the most significant attempts yet at direct peace dialogue since the outbreak of hostilities.

While skepticism remains high, the combination of Trump’s mediation, European support, and Putin’s declared readiness has raised cautious optimism. Many observers believe that if carefully managed, this could be a turning point — or at least an opening — for long-term peace-building between Russia and Ukraine.
