The federal cabinet has approved the postponement of the scheduled local government elections in Islamabad once again.

A brief meeting of the federal cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which the decisions taken in the Cabinet Committee on Legislation meetings held on December 3 and December 30 were ratified.

According to sources, the cabinet meeting reviewed new legislation related to local government elections in the federal capital. The Chief Commissioner of Islamabad also gave a briefing to the federal cabinet regarding the local government elections.

Sources said that following the briefing by the Chief Commissioner, the federal cabinet approved the postponement of local government elections in Islamabad once again.

Sources further stated that the cabinet also approved legislation to hold local government elections in Islamabad under a Punjab-style local government system.

It is worth noting that the Election Commission had scheduled the local government elections in Islamabad for February 15, with the compilation of results planned from February 16 to February 19.
