Breakthrough in Journalist Khawar Hussain’s Mysterious Death: Sindh Government Orders Fresh Post-Mortem and Launches High-Level Inquiry

Karachi – In a significant development in the investigation into the mysterious death of journalist Khawar Hussain, the Sindh government has constituted a medical board to re-examine his body after demands from the journalist community and the bereaved family for a second post-mortem. The move comes amid growing speculation and unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of his sudden death.

Calls for Transparency in Investigation

The family of Khawar Hussain, supported by fellow journalists and press associations, had expressed dissatisfaction with the initial post-mortem conducted in Sanghar. They argued that the report left too many questions unanswered and demanded a more thorough examination by senior doctors and forensic experts. Responding to this demand, the Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar confirmed that a medical board comprising senior pathologists and forensic specialists has been formed.

“The board will re-examine the body of Khawar Hussain today and carry out a fresh post-mortem to determine the actual cause of death,” Lanjar announced. He added that the government was committed to ensuring transparency and impartiality in the probe, given the public sensitivity of the case.

Earlier Post-Mortem and Doubts

The first post-mortem, carried out in Sanghar, failed to convince either the family or the journalist community. Many believed that crucial forensic details had been overlooked. Concerns were also raised about the manner in which the body was examined and the speed with which the report was compiled. These factors fueled suspicions and prompted demands for a second examination in Hyderabad under the supervision of more experienced experts.

Fact-Finding Committee Established

Alongside the medical board, the Sindh government has also set up a fact-finding committee to independently probe the circumstances surrounding Hussain’s death. The committee is headed by Additional Inspector General of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Azaad Khan, and includes DIG West Irfan Baloch and SSP Sanghar Abid Baloch.

According to the notification, the committee has been tasked with submitting a comprehensive report to the Inspector General of Sindh Police within two days. The terms of reference include examining the forensic evidence, reviewing CCTV footage, and recording witness statements to piece together the final hours of the journalist’s life.

Forensic Evidence Collected

DIG Faisal Bashir confirmed that investigators have already dispatched Khawar Hussain’s pistol and vehicle for forensic examination. The findings are expected to clarify whether the weapon was fired recently and if there are any fingerprints or ballistic evidence linking it to the incident.

Bashir added that the Call Data Record (CDR) of Hussain’s mobile phone will be obtained within 24 hours to establish who he contacted in the hours leading up to his death. This is expected to play a critical role in reconstructing the timeline of events.

Eyewitness Accounts Raise Questions

Eyewitness testimonies have deepened the mystery rather than resolved it. According to people present near the scene, no one heard the sound of gunfire, nor did they observe any suspicious movement around Hussain’s vehicle. His car windows were rolled up, and there were no signs of a struggle or external disturbance near the spot where he was found.

This absence of gunfire noise and lack of eyewitness confirmation has left investigators questioning whether the incident was indeed a case of suicide, as initially suspected, or whether foul play was involved.

CCTV Footage: A Critical Clue

Authorities have also secured CCTV footage from the area. The video reportedly shows Khawar Hussain visiting a restaurant shortly before the incident. He is then seen returning to his vehicle and sitting inside. Beyond that, the footage does not clearly reveal what transpired, but investigators are carefully reviewing it frame by frame to identify any anomalies.

The footage will be cross-referenced with forensic reports and phone records to determine whether Hussain was alone in his final moments or if someone else interacted with him before his death.

The Body Moved to Hyderabad

As part of the renewed investigation, Hussain’s body has been transferred to a cold storage facility in Hyderabad, where the medical board will conduct its re-examination. Officials confirmed that this step is necessary not only to re-establish the cause of death but also to restore confidence among the family and journalist community that the probe is being conducted fairly.

Public Reaction and Journalists’ Concerns

The death of Khawar Hussain has sent shockwaves through the media fraternity. Colleagues describe him as a diligent journalist who was passionate about his work and fearless in his reporting. Press associations across Sindh have called for a transparent inquiry, insisting that the truth must come out—whether his death was accidental, self-inflicted, or the result of targeted foul play.

Journalists have also warned against any attempt to cover up the circumstances of his death, arguing that such incidents undermine press freedom and the safety of reporters in Pakistan.

Government’s Pledge of Fairness

Sindh authorities have assured the family and media organizations that no stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth. “This government values the role of journalists in democracy and will not allow any compromise in this case. Justice will be ensured,” Home Minister Lanjar said.

Police officials reiterated that the investigation will be evidence-based and free from political interference. They emphasized that all leads—whether forensic, digital, or testimonial—will be thoroughly pursued.

Looking Ahead

The coming days are crucial as both the fresh post-mortem report and the findings of the fact-finding committee are awaited. These outcomes are expected to determine whether Khawar Hussain’s death will be officially recorded as suicide, natural causes, or homicide.

For now, the case remains open-ended and filled with unanswered questions. What is certain, however, is that Khawar Hussain’s death has highlighted the precarious environment in which journalists in Pakistan operate. As his colleagues demand truth and accountability, the government’s handling of this case will be a key test of its commitment to justice and press freedom.
