An unusual yet tragic incident occurred in the Indian state of Rajasthan where a dispute over a blanket and bedsheet led to the murder of an Indian army soldier aboard a moving train. The incident has raised serious questions about passenger safety, staff conduct, and the lack of discipline and oversight in public transport services across India.

According to Indian media reports, the victim, identified as Jigar Chaudhary, was serving in the Indian Army and was travelling home on leave. On 2 November, he boarded a train headed toward Sabarmati, Gujarat. During the journey, Chaudhary requested a blanket and bedsheet from the train attendant—a standard facility provided to passengers in certain coaches. However, the train attendant allegedly refused to provide the items. This refusal escalated into a verbal argument between the two.

Multiple passengers on the train reported that what began as a simple disagreement soon intensified. Chaudhary insisted he was entitled to receive the bedding, while the attendant repeatedly declined the request. The heated exchange evolved into a physical altercation, drawing the attention of other passengers, though no one intervened to stop the conflict.

As the situation spiraled out of control, the train attendant reportedly pulled out a knife. In the midst of the struggle, he stabbed the soldier, causing a serious injury. The wound proved to be deep and severe. Due to the lack of immediate medical assistance on the train, excessive bleeding led to the soldier’s death before the train could arrive at the next station.

Upon reaching the nearest stop, railway police boarded the train, examined the situation, and confirmed that Chaudhary had died due to the stabbing. The police subsequently arrested the train attendant, who was allegedly employed on a contract basis through a private service provider rather than directly by the Indian Railways. Authorities have registered a murder case against the suspect.

The Railway Administration released a statement acknowledging the incident and confirming that the accused had been terminated from his job immediately. They clarified that the attendant was not a permanent railway employee but had been hired through a contractor, raising concerns about the vetting and training process for outsourced staff on Indian trains.
