Moscow, Russia: Russia has expressed strong opposition to the United Nations’ decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran, calling the move illegal and provocative. According to foreign news agencies, the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the economic sanctions, stating that actions by European countries are escalating tensions rather than promoting diplomacy.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the sanctions are not diplomatic measures and could lead to irreparable consequences for Iran. They warned that such steps increase regional instability and could undermine international efforts for dialogue.

Iran had previously received sanctions relief under the 2015 nuclear deal, but the United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018 during Donald Trump’s presidency. The recent UN decision comes amid continued disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

In the UN Security Council, a resolution to permanently lift sanctions on Iran was rejected, with only four countries voting in favor. The four nations supporting Iran included Russia, China, Pakistan, and Algeria, while nine other members opposed the resolution, causing it to fail.

As a result of the Security Council vote, economic sanctions on Iran will remain in place. The vote followed a 30-day process initiated on August 28 by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, aimed at reinstating UN sanctions against Iran.

The decision has drawn widespread international attention, with Russia warning that continued pressure on Iran through sanctions could have serious geopolitical repercussions, potentially destabilizing the region and complicating diplomatic efforts.

Russia’s strong reaction highlights its ongoing support for Iran and opposition to unilateral or multilateral measures perceived as aggressive or unlawful, emphasizing the need for negotiation over coercion in addressing Iran’s nuclear and economic issues.
