Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has unveiled a revamped central contracts system, introducing a new multi-track model designed to better reflect the demands of modern cricket and reward player performance more effectively.

The new framework categorizes players according to formats and development pathways, with a strong emphasis on merit and performance-based incentives.

New Central Contracts Structure

According to the PCB, the revised model consists of four separate tracks:

Track A

Track A will include specialist red-ball (Test) cricketers who primarily contribute in the longer format of the game.

Track B

Track B will feature players involved in Test and One-Day International (ODI) cricket, recognizing those who contribute across multiple formats.

Track C

Track C will be reserved for T20 specialists, reflecting the growing importance and unique demands of the shortest format.

Track D

Track D will focus on development and academy players, providing opportunities for emerging cricketers to progress into the national setup.

The PCB said the new structure recognizes the distinct requirements, value, and identity of each format while creating a clearer pathway for future talent.

Performance to Determine 85% of Contracts

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that the board is placing performance at the center of the new system.

“Eighty-five percent of a player’s contract will be based on performance,” he stated during a briefing.

He explained that data analysis and performance metrics will also be integrated into domestic cricket, allowing more objective evaluation of players across all levels.

Focus on Improving Tournament Results

Mohsin Naqvi acknowledged that while Pakistan has achieved encouraging results in bilateral series, performances in major international tournaments have often fallen short of expectations.

He said the PCB is working to address these shortcomings and is confident that improvements will become visible over time.

“We are providing every possible resource for cricket. Good results in tournaments are our collective responsibility, and efforts are underway to improve performance,” he said.

Domestic Cricket Participation to Be Mandatory

The PCB chairman emphasized the importance of domestic cricket in player development and selection.

He revealed that contracted players will be required to participate in domestic competitions, adding that failure to do so could have consequences.

“If a player does not take part in domestic cricket, the results of that decision will be evident,” Naqvi said.

The policy aims to strengthen the domestic structure and ensure that national players remain connected to the country’s cricketing system.

Greater Transparency in Fitness and Selection

Naqvi also expressed support for conducting fitness tests in front of the media to enhance transparency.

He noted that the selection committee has substantial work ahead and said the PCB has prepared a detailed framework covering all aspects of player evaluation, contracts, and responsibilities.

According to him, players have responded positively to the new system after being fully briefed on its details.
