The recent arrests of Aleema Khan’s sons, Shahrez and Sheershah, have become a flashpoint in Pakistan’s already tense political atmosphere, with the government defending the legitimacy of the cases while the opposition denounces them as a strategy to maintain political pressure.

Government’s Justification

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, while speaking on Geo News program Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, responded directly to criticism surrounding the arrests. He admitted that the police acted late in detaining the two but strongly rejected the notion that the cases themselves were fabricated.

“You can say that the police arrested them late, but you cannot say that their cases were fake,” Chaudhry remarked.

According to him, both sons of Aleema Khan – Shahrez and Sheershah – were present at Jinnah House on May 9, the day widespread protests broke out across Pakistan following the arrest of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The May 9 riots included attacks on government buildings, military sites, and symbols of the state, marking one of the most violent political episodes in recent history.

Chaudhry stressed that gathering sufficient evidence took time, which explained the delay in action. “If there is no evidence against them, then the courts will provide them relief. But dismissing the cases as fake from the start is not correct,” he added.

He also clarified that Shahrez, after being arrested, was presented before a court within 24 hours, in accordance with legal procedures. “Due process was followed,” he insisted.

Opposition’s Counter-Narrative

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership has strongly criticized the arrests, portraying them as politically motivated. PTI’s senior leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser claimed that the detentions were part of a broader attempt by the government to suppress the opposition and keep pressure on Imran Khan’s allies and their families.

“The arrest of Aleema Khan’s sons is an effort to keep pressure on us. What we demand is not political victimization but a grand dialogue, where all political forces and stakeholders are brought together to find a way forward,” Qaiser said.

He emphasized that dialogue and reconciliation were the only sustainable solutions to Pakistan’s political and economic challenges, arguing that arrests and selective accountability would only deepen divisions.

The sequence of arrests has also drawn attention. On August 21, police raided Aleema Khan’s Lahore residence and took her elder son Shahrez Khan into custody. Shortly afterward, Sheershah Khan was also arrested, reportedly while returning from a court appearance.

Following his arrest, a local court handed Shahrez over to police on an eight-day physical remand, allowing further interrogation and evidence collection.
