Shama Junejo, who recently attended the 80th United Nations General Assembly session as part of Pakistan’s delegation, has clarified that her inclusion was a direct decision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who also assigned her the task of drafting his UN speech.

Her participation triggered widespread debate on social media, mainly because she has often been labeled in the past as a supporter of Israel. This led to criticism of the government for allowing her to represent Pakistan on such a high-profile global platform.

Adding to the controversy, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and the Foreign Office both publicly distanced themselves from the matter, denying any role in bringing her into the delegation.

In response, Dr. Shama Junejo posted a detailed explanation on X (formerly Twitter). She stated that:

• She has been working with the Prime Minister for several months, providing policy briefs, advice, and talking points.
• During the India-Pakistan war episode, all her recommendations and notes were part of the official record.
• Her role at the UNGA was an extension of the responsibilities assigned directly by the PM’s office.

Junejo emphasized that her work was based on national interest and not personal affiliations.

Despite her clarification, the debate continues, with critics questioning the government’s judgment, while her supporters argue that professional expertise should be valued over past perceptions.
