JI chief Hafiz Naeem says in touch with PTI for long march on petroleum levy issue
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said on Wednesday that the party would give a call for a long march towards Islamabad in case the government did not reduce the petroleum levy.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, he said the government had sought three days from the party.
The JI, Naeem added, was in contact with the opposition parties. “I have contacted PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan,” he said, adding that he was also ready to talk to the PPP.
He said that the party welcomed the passage of a resolution by the Sindh Assembly, calling for abolishing the levy. “It is not because of international market that the levy has been imposed, but because of the government’s incompetence.”
Turning down the government’s request to end the sit-in, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Tuesday said that the party was mulling train march or a long march in case negotiations failed.
“And if long march fails to produce the desired results, the JI will then think about further expanding its protest,” he warned.
He demanded that the levy imposed on petroleum products’ prices should immediately be withdrawn.
Naeem said that the imposition of taxes on poor, middle class, students, riders and labourers did not make any sense.
The party, the JI chief said, was not fond of staging a sit-in, but it wanted an end to injustices being done to the masses.
He demanded that the government should not fulfill the conditions laid down by the IMF by taxing the people. “If the government wants to meet the tax targets, it should tax the rich rather than the poor,” Naeem said.
He informed that the JI had given some time to the government to meet its demands.
