Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Praises U.S. President’s Role in Facilitating Historic Peace Agreement Between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warmly welcomed the landmark peace agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia, hailing it as a breakthrough that could usher in a new era of stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the South Caucasus region. In his statement, the Prime Minister extended deep appreciation to United States President Donald Trump for his active diplomatic role in bringing the two long-time adversaries to the negotiating table.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that the U.S.-facilitated accord is a significant development in a region plagued by decades of political disputes, border skirmishes, and humanitarian crises. He noted that this peace agreement signals a turning point for both nations, ending a cycle of hostility and opening the door to peaceful coexistence and mutual economic growth.

A New Chapter for the South Caucasus
Shehbaz Sharif described the deal as “a historic step toward resolving one of the world’s most persistent and deep-rooted conflicts.” He pointed out that the South Caucasus, a strategically important region bridging Europe and Asia, has for decades suffered from intermittent wars, displacement of populations, and stalled development due to the Azerbaijan–Armenia conflict.

“This agreement,” the Prime Minister said, “is not merely a cessation of hostilities — it is the beginning of a new chapter where both nations can focus on rebuilding, fostering cross-border trade, and ensuring that future generations inherit a region of peace rather than one of perpetual war.”

Congratulations to Azerbaijan
Prime Minister Sharif offered his heartfelt congratulations to President Ilham Aliyev, the leadership of Azerbaijan, and the Azerbaijani people for their steadfastness and resilience over the years. He emphasized that Pakistan has always stood shoulder to shoulder with its brotherly nation, Azerbaijan, in times of difficulty and remains committed to strengthening bilateral relations in all spheres.

“Pakistan’s bond with Azerbaijan is rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for regional peace and prosperity,” he noted. “We take pride in witnessing this historic achievement, and we reaffirm our unwavering support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and development goals.”

Commending the U.S. Mediation Effort
The Prime Minister specifically highlighted the constructive and proactive role played by U.S. President Donald Trump in facilitating the talks. He observed that the American President’s decision to invite both Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister to the White House created a neutral and high-profile setting that enabled honest dialogue and compromise.

“President Trump’s personal involvement in this process was instrumental in bridging the gap between two sides that have remained divided for decades,” Shehbaz Sharif said. “Such mediation efforts reflect the importance of responsible global leadership in resolving longstanding conflicts through diplomacy rather than force.”

White House Peace Summit and Agreement Details
The historic agreement was finalized during a meeting at the White House, where President Trump hosted both leaders for an intensive round of negotiations. According to reports, the discussions focused on establishing a permanent ceasefire, implementing border demarcation measures, initiating prisoner exchanges, and creating mechanisms for resolving future disputes peacefully.

Both sides reportedly agreed to set up a joint monitoring committee, supported by international observers, to ensure that the ceasefire is respected and that humanitarian aid flows unimpeded to affected areas. The agreement also envisions economic cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and transportation projects — an unprecedented step given the region’s history of enmity.

Decades of Conflict Finally Addressed
The Azerbaijan–Armenia conflict, largely centered around the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced countless families since the late 1980s. Multiple ceasefire attempts in the past had collapsed due to mistrust, sporadic clashes, and lack of enforcement mechanisms. This time, however, the involvement of a major global power like the United States, combined with the political will of both leaders, appears to have created a more sustainable path forward.

Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the courage it took for both sides to compromise, recognizing that peace requires not only political agreements but also reconciliation at the societal level. “It will take time for the wounds of war to heal,” he said, “but this agreement is a vital first step toward building mutual trust.”

Pakistan’s Commitment to Regional Peace
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that Pakistan supports all peaceful efforts aimed at resolving international disputes in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He expressed hope that the success of the Azerbaijan–Armenia agreement could inspire similar diplomatic breakthroughs in other conflict zones.

He further stated that Pakistan stands ready to share its own experiences in peacebuilding, development partnerships, and economic cooperation to help both nations reap the full benefits of their newfound peace.

Looking Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges
While celebrating the accord, Shehbaz Sharif also acknowledged that challenges remain. He pointed out that deep-seated grievances, political opposition, and extremist elements on both sides could seek to undermine the peace process. Therefore, sustained international support, vigilant monitoring, and confidence-building measures will be essential in ensuring the agreement’s durability.

“If implemented in good faith, this agreement can transform the South Caucasus into a hub of regional connectivity, trade, and cultural exchange,” he said. “The potential dividends of peace — in terms of economic growth, job creation, and social stability — are enormous.”

Final Words of Appreciation
In his closing remarks, the Prime Minister once again lauded President Trump’s “visionary diplomacy” and congratulated the governments and people of both Azerbaijan and Armenia. “This is a victory for diplomacy, a victory for the human spirit, and a victory for all those who believe that dialogue is the only path to sustainable peace,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the spirit of cooperation displayed at the White House summit will continue to guide relations between the two nations in the years to come. “Let this be the beginning of an enduring friendship, not just between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but among all nations committed to peace.”
