Misbah-ul-Haq Urges Coaches and Parents Not to Put Unnecessary Pressure on Young Cricketers
LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain, national selector, and batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy, Misbah-ul-Haq, has advised young cricketers to prioritize discipline, consistency, and hard work, while urging coaches, mentors, and parents to avoid placing unnecessary pressure on aspiring players.
Speaking in an interview with PCB Digital, Misbah emphasized that nurturing young talent requires patience and encouragement rather than unrealistic expectations. He said excessive pressure at an early stage can negatively affect a player’s confidence, enjoyment of the game, and long-term development.
“Coaches, mentors, and parents should refrain from putting unnecessary pressure on young cricketers,” Misbah said, stressing that young athletes perform best when they are allowed to develop naturally in a supportive environment.
The former captain noted that while young players should be given responsibilities to help them mature, they should not be burdened to the point where their passion for cricket begins to fade. According to him, maintaining enthusiasm and love for the game is just as important as developing technical skills.
Misbah rejected the idea that natural ability alone is enough to build a successful cricket career. He said discipline and consistency are the true foundations of long-term success, adding that talented players who fail to maintain high standards of professionalism often struggle to achieve their full potential.
“Talent alone is not enough. Discipline and consistency are the real guarantees of success,” he remarked.
Highlighting the qualities shared by successful international cricketers, Misbah explained that elite athletes never compromise on their daily routines. He said regular training, physical fitness, structured practice sessions, and a balanced diet are essential components of sustained excellence.
According to Misbah, every successful player understands the importance of continuous improvement and remains committed to maintaining peak physical and mental condition throughout his career.
He also underlined the significance of first-class four-day cricket in the development of young players. Longer-format matches, he explained, help cricketers strengthen their technique, improve concentration, and develop the mental resilience required to succeed at the highest level of the sport.
Misbah said four-day cricket teaches patience, decision-making, and the ability to perform under pressure—qualities that cannot always be developed in shorter formats alone. He believes that players who excel in longer-format cricket often build stronger technical foundations that benefit them across all formats of the game.
Drawing from his own experience as one of Pakistan’s most successful Test captains, Misbah emphasized that mental toughness is just as important as physical ability. He encouraged young players to remain focused on continuous learning rather than chasing instant success or public recognition.
He also advised aspiring cricketers to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth instead of becoming discouraged by setbacks. According to him, failures are an inevitable part of every sporting career and should be viewed as valuable learning experiences.
Misbah’s remarks come at a time when Pakistan continues to invest in youth development through its domestic cricket structure and the National Cricket Academy. Cricket experts have frequently highlighted the need to create an environment where emerging players can develop without excessive external expectations.
The former captain’s message also serves as a reminder to parents and coaches that their role extends beyond teaching cricketing skills. Providing emotional support, encouraging healthy competition, and allowing young athletes to enjoy the game are equally important in shaping successful careers.
Misbah concluded by reiterating that success in professional cricket is built on years of dedication, discipline, and perseverance rather than talent alone. He encouraged young cricketers to remain committed to hard work, maintain high fitness standards, practice consistently, and continue improving their skills with patience and determination.
His advice reflects a broader philosophy that sustainable success in cricket comes from balancing technical development with mental strength, discipline, and a genuine passion for the game.
