The Mumbai High Court has acquitted 12 individuals who were convicted in the 2006 train bombings case.

According to Indian media, the court overturned the 2015 trial court verdict and ordered the release of 11 of the convicts. One of the accused had passed away during the appeal process.

The train bombings in Mumbai in July 2006 claimed 189 lives and left 827 people injured. In 2015, a trial court had sentenced 12 individuals, five of whom received the death penalty, while the others were handed various prison terms.

Those sentenced to death included Faisal Shaikh, Asif Khan, Kamal Ansari, Ehtesham Siddiqui, and Naveed Khan. Others—Sajid Ansari, Mohammad Ali, Dr. Tanveer, Majid, Muzammil, Sohail, and Zamir Shaikh—were given life sentences.

The Mumbai High Court stated that the prosecution failed to establish the charges against the accused. Due to lack of evidence, all convicts have been acquitted. The court added that it is difficult to believe the accused committed the crime, and therefore, the sentences are being overturned.
