Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Doubles Compensation Package for Flood Victims: Families of the Deceased to Receive Rs. 2 Million
Peshawar – In a major relief initiative for families devastated by recent floods, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has announced that compensation payments for flood victims will be doubled. Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the provincial cabinet has approved that the families of those who lost their lives in the floods will now receive Rs. 2 million each, instead of the earlier Rs. 1 million.
A Formal Start to Compensation Payments
The official disbursement of compensation payments has already begun across the province. According to Provincial Minister for Information Barrister Saif, the KP government has released Rs. 850 million to the affected districts for immediate distribution. Cheques are being handed over to eligible families, with provincial authorities ensuring that the process remains transparent and efficient.
Chief Minister Gandapur personally visited Swat, one of the worst-hit regions, to meet with grieving families and hand out compensation cheques. His visit was intended not only to provide financial assistance but also to demonstrate solidarity with the victims. “The provincial government stands shoulder to shoulder with the people in this hour of trial,” Barrister Saif remarked.
Doubling the Compensation: A Message of Solidarity
The decision to double the compensation is being seen as a significant step, both practically and symbolically. Many flood-affected families had expressed concern that the original amount of Rs. 1 million was insufficient to rebuild their lives, particularly in cases where the deceased was the primary breadwinner. By raising the compensation to Rs. 2 million, the government has sent a message that it recognizes the scale of the tragedy and is willing to go the extra mile to support those who have lost everything.
“This is not just about money,” said Saif. “It is about standing with the victims, assuring them that their sacrifices and suffering are acknowledged. The Chief Minister himself is touring affected areas to meet families face-to-face, to listen to their concerns, and to assure them that the government is with them.”
Preparedness for Further Rainfall
The KP government has also cautioned citizens to remain vigilant as weather forecasts predict more rainfall in the coming days. Barrister Saif urged residents to take safety measures seriously and avoid unnecessary movement near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas. “We appeal to the public: do not go near streams and rivers. Protect your children, protect your families,” he advised.
An emergency helpline, 1700, has been made active for immediate reporting of incidents. Citizens are encouraged to use it to alert authorities about any dangerous developments, so that rescue operations can be dispatched without delay.
Human Toll of the Floods
According to official figures, the floods and flash rains have already claimed 325 lives across the province. Among the deceased are 274 men, 30 women, and 21 children. In addition, at least 156 people have been injured, including 123 men, 23 women, and 10 children.
The scale of destruction has been equally alarming for infrastructure and housing. A total of 336 homes have been damaged across KP, of which 106 houses were completely destroyed, leaving families homeless and vulnerable. Hundreds more have sustained partial damage.
Buner Hit the Hardest
Among all affected districts, Buner has suffered the greatest loss of life, with 217 deaths recorded so far. The district’s villages and settlements, many of which are located close to streams and prone to flash floods, have been devastated. Emergency services are working around the clock in Buner, but officials acknowledge that the scale of destruction has made rescue and relief extremely challenging.
Other areas badly hit include Swat, Bajaur, Mansehra, Shangla, Lower Dir, and Battagram, where dozens of fatalities have been reported. Landslides, road collapses, and washed-away bridges have made access to remote communities difficult, forcing rescue teams to rely on boats and helicopters in some cases.
Government’s Commitment and Next Steps
The KP government insists that relief and rehabilitation remain its top priority. Besides compensation to families of the deceased, arrangements are being made to support those who have been injured and those who have lost their homes. Shelter camps have been established in several districts, and food supplies, medical assistance, and clean drinking water are being provided.
Chief Minister Gandapur has also directed authorities to conduct a detailed damage assessment in all districts to determine the scale of losses in agriculture, livestock, and infrastructure. “Reconstruction will require time and resources, but we will not abandon the victims,” officials said.
A Test of Resilience
For the people of KP, these floods are yet another test of resilience in a province that has frequently been hit by natural disasters, from earthquakes to flash floods. Many families are struggling not only with grief but also with the daunting task of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods. While financial compensation offers temporary relief, affected communities stress that long-term solutions—such as stronger embankments, better drainage systems, and climate-resilient infrastructure—are urgently needed to prevent future tragedies.
Civil society organizations and local charities have also stepped in to support relief operations, but they warn that without sustained government investment in disaster preparedness, the cycle of destruction and rebuilding will continue.
Looking Ahead
As KP braces for further rainfall, authorities remain on high alert. With hundreds of lives already lost and infrastructure heavily damaged, the focus is now on saving lives, rehabilitating the displaced, and ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most.
For the grieving families who lost loved ones, the government’s decision to double compensation provides some measure of comfort, though nothing can truly replace their loss. The real challenge, however, lies in preventing similar tragedies in the future—a task that will require not only financial resources but also political will, planning, and cooperation at every level of governance.
