Hermosillo, Sonora – November 2, 2025:
A devastating explosion followed by a massive fire at a superstore in the Mexican state of Sonora has left at least 22 people dead and 13 others injured, according to local authorities.

Preliminary reports suggest the blast occurred when an electrical transformer exploded inside the supermarket located in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora. At the time of the explosion, a large number of shoppers were inside the store, leading to widespread panic and chaos.

Following the blast, a raging fire engulfed the entire building, trapping several people inside before rescue teams could respond. Firefighters and emergency services rushed to the scene, but the intensity of the blaze made rescue operations extremely difficult.

Media outlets and eyewitnesses reported that among the deceased were seven children and their parents, including four boys and three girls, all of whom were shopping in the store when the explosion occurred.

Local hospitals have confirmed that 13 survivors are being treated for severe burns and smoke inhalation, while authorities continue searching the charred remains of the building for any additional victims.

Mexican officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to assess whether faulty electrical wiring or maintenance negligence may have been responsible for the transformer failure.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and has directed federal emergency teams to assist the local government in relief and recovery efforts.
